Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2 beta live on Steam

tried it this evening, wish there was some sort of tutorial. I basically had a ranked match against a level 7 player (how the hell is that ranked when I am a level 0 player) and he just wandered over destroyed my base within 3 minutes. I was still trying to work out the control system.

I know watcha mean, I had a little go before heading off to work this morning, couldnt help but feel guilty for being such a bad team mate trying to learn the game. Great game though, after 15mins play I pre ordered it!

Right Listen up if your new or thinking about trying the game

First off, dont jump right into online play, Go to custom match, host, pick a 1 v 1 map and set the other player as CPU

play alteast 3 games to learn controls and stuff before you event hink about going online.

Second. Online matchmaking is crap, everyone knows it. It does NOT work of the shown rank next to the names on the score board, but on your "trueskill" that is calculated via Games for Windows Live, you can find your TrueScore by going to "History" at the start menu. I personaly hate Games for windows live, and wish they would use steam, but it seems we cant have everything we want :(

Third, 3 v 3 match play is currently a bit broken due to some stupid bugs and retarded resource issue. Prior to the latest patch, the game was MASSIVELY entertaining, it was a real tactical game, no spamming of units, you had to think about what you bought and it really mattered if you lost a squad. But with the latest patch they added in too many resources and the game now suffers from a total Core Game Play shift from Tactical to SPAM, where people can build what ever they like and spam units at the enemy. Relic have posted on the forums acknowledging this problem along with some others and say they have a zero day patch ready for release day. No one is sure yet if we will see this patch before then, but we can hope.

If you liked C&C games you might like this, its different from your usual base building, it takes the focus away from building up multiple tech buildings that can be destroyed, and instead focuses on the squads and equiping them with the right weapons for the problems you face. The positions and tactics you use are vital to surviving and winning. Deciding when to push forward with melee units risking the enemy having entrenched heavy weapons, or when to give up ground and fall back to replenish lost units is key to victory. I have even been bluffed before when a player made me fall back despite him having next to no units, but he made such good use of them i felt threatened and fell back to guard what i had already secured, allowing him time to recover.

Personally, i love this game, however when they introduced the last patch i wanted to try cancelling my order, but now that we all know the game is going back to the way it was, a tight tactical game where every unit matters, im back in 100% :)

Give the 1v1 a try with friends. learn to play that way, be prepared for release day next week :)

About the maps:

http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/44061/Da...ultiplayer-Maps

Apparently, Dawn of War II ships with just five multiplayer maps. Relic, however, will be rectifying that with zero-day patchage:

For Day Zero, we’re already making improvements to the game based on early feedback to ensure fans get the best possible experience. In addition, within the first week after launch, we’ll be adding two additional multiplayer maps to the game.

In total there will be 7 maps I think, with their 1v1 counterparts, and hopefully there will be a way for people to create custom maps (and mods), if not, I don't see this game going to far.

I've played a bunch of games and noticed something. Sometimes, the enemy player(s) would rush you by attacking your "base". It's a cheap move that leaves you cornered and unable to do anything. Aside from that the game is really fun. The graphics are amazing and it runs decently well on high settings with my gaming rig (Core2Duo E6750 @ 3.2 GHz, HD 4870, 8GB DDR2 RAM). The graphics engine titled "Essence Engine 2.0" has come a long way since Company of Heroes.

For these types of games I enjoy the SP of them, which is why I buy them. For some reason I don't like playing online with these types of games. The only time I do is when a friend of mine actually gets the game. Either way I can't wait for the release.

Thanks for the helpful post, clx!

I found that custom games last night and had a few skirmishes against the AI. I hope its true and the game goes more tactical based again, sounds good!
