Has anyone got a onbaord soundmax chip on there Windows 7 install?, im having to use mine due to my x-fi not working under window7. ive installed the software from my mobo's website but i cant get full 5.1 surround sound, i only appear to get 2.1

When i do the sound check in Sound manager, i get the test sounds but when i play music or games it only goes to 2.1

If you've installed the SoundMax Vista drivers you should have the Sonic Focus Processing available which can give 2.0 to 5.1 upmix. You can get to it by going to properties for "SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio" in the Sound Control Panel applet and clicking on the System Effects tab.

Even with it enabled the rear speakers will still be very quiet in comparison to Creative's CMSS 3D, but you should at least have some upmixing going on. Personally I'm not a huge fan of this effect as it also tampers with the audio output (adding "dynamics"and such like a bit like Creative EAX settings do) as well as performing the upmix so I prefer to use the setting on my speakers to get Stereo x2.

ive installed the software but its not showing for me

this is what i have

Those tabs look like the ones you get from the default Microsoft drivers (in Vista at least)

Not sure if they'll work but you can try the drivers listed here:

http://www.sonicfocus.com/support.html#blackhawk (ASUS_BlackHawk_v41.zip)

You don't need to install all the software just change the drivers using Device Manager by pointing it at the amd64\Vista or i386\Vista folder in the archive and reboot. I use these drivers for the SoundMax AD1988B chip on my ASUS P5K-E motherboard on both Vista and Windows 7 and they both have the Effects tab available.

Has anyone found a way to solve this? I tried for about 2 hours last night and couldn't get it to work as it should. Motherboard is an ASUS P5E, and I was playing with Windows 7 x64.

I did get the drivers to work, by manually installing the XP .inf file found somewhere under \SMAXWDM\W2K_XP but my microphone won't work, and everything I see under "Recording devices" is the stereo mix. This means I can record whatever is playing through my speakers (I tried it, it works), but since my microphone doesn't play on the speakers, it is not recorded.

I have the same problem on XP, except that even though the only recording device available is "Stereo Mix", what actually gets recorded is my microphone, and none of the sounds being played on the computer.

I hate SoundMAX. Like MindTooth said, never again.

What version of the drivers are you guys using? Also what are your device ID's? There are 3 types of SoundMax devices out there for Asus boards (well really they are all just as capable as eachother but the more expensive ones come with better features through the drivers) and different drivers support different devices. There is a test Win7 driver here (I'm not sure if it is signed or not):

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/misc/audio...B_6570_Win7.zip

If that one doesn't work try this version here:

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/misc/audio...0_V61016520.zip

Remember to fully uninstall and reboot before you try the different versions. Let me know how it goes! Again please post your device id's, that way I can find the exact driver you will need. :)

Thank you both for your help, but I tried all three drivers you guys linked, and none of those gave me a "Microphone" under recording devices. The most I had, was a "Line in" device, but I don't want to have to plug my mic in there, because I sometimes use it for my guitar.

Why is it so hard to make it work as it should? Granted, it didn't work the way I expected it under XP either, but I thought that was because the XP drivers were bad. Turns out they are, but Vista/7 drivers are MUCH WORSE. :(

In some cases, I got this message: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

And a small window came up on bootup saying I would have to reinstall SoundMAX. Of course, this never helped.

And I don't know what you mean by Device ID, so I'll post my Hardware IDs here:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_198B&SUBSYS_1043829C&REV_1004

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_198B&SUBSYS_1043829C

I'd be very grateful if you could supply me with drivers that will give me an option to play back the Mic and Line-In input, and to select between 3 recording devices: Stereo Mix, Microphone and Line-In. :(

This might work:

Open soundmanager > Speaker Configuration > Choose 6 Channels then check UAJ AUTO! It will definitely work if your audio jacks are correctly plugged in into corresponding colors.

I did this and it works , discovered myself.

Thanks for posting, but I'll need your help again. I did not find anything called "Sound Manager" or similar, so I just went into the "Sound" screen, from the control panel. There I could click "Configure", but I found no way to choose 6 channels, so I selected 5.1. Never saw anything like "UAJ AUTO".
