My opinion of Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II

Recommended Posts

I have played Dawn of War since the initial release in 2004 and loved the game. I have religiously purchased the expansion packs and have utter awe for the options and diversity of armies. I have been disappointed in the amount of people online to play but overall, it is an excellent RTS with epic battles. Last year I tried Company of Heroes and love that game as well. The accuracy in the units and graphic representation have made me fall in love with the WWII genre once again. When I can zoom in and watch the units cover their ears when artillery goes off, just makes me feel like a boy again playing with my green and grey soldiers.

I started to try the Dawn of War II demo out and it really feels like it is lacking something. Graphics are great, battles are detailed, and the units are convincing. I think it is the overall scale of battle that makes this seem small, lacking the epic saga of battles. I was telling me friend last night, Dawn of War II beta feels like they are leaving everything out -at least I hope they are for the beta. For the first time, I am going out wait for the review before I purchase this game. I think I will stick to COH and the original for now. It just feels like it is lacking heart with its creation to me.

Something that I did not particularly like about DOWI was how units were "clumped" together into groups. I think I would have preferred the units to have been individuals. Other then that, it was a good game with lots of cool stuff. I think I'll wait for the reviews before getting DOW2 as well.

DoW was never a big scale game nor meant to be.

Epic Scale is whenever They make an epic version of DoW. but basic warhammer, and thus DoW, is a small tactical game, and it focuses on the squads and individual units rather than the strategig overall battle like the epic series of Warhammer. on that note, an epic version of DoW would be awesome. But I also like DoW for what is is and if I want big huge strategic battles I play Supreme Commander

Suncrafter: Squads is an integral part of the Warhammer gameplay, don't expect that to change, personally I also find it a lot more logical than commanding individual personell. It also helps smooth out the gameplay, making it easier and flow better, so you're able to focus more on the actual tactics and commanding and playing the game, not not on bulding groups. and creating a ridiculous amount of unit groups.

Well put HawkMan, my favorite RTSs are Dawn of War and SupCom for those reasons exactly. I have my small scale, more tactical game and I have my huge scale game.

I think another game that follows Dawn of War's example is Company of Heroes. Well, usually anyway.
