[Ubuntu 8.10 x64] Latest update bricks my system

Recommended Posts

I just did a full update using Ubuntu's built-in updater, and upon trying to boot to the new kernel, my screen turns to the normal bright orange color, as it normally does before the login screen shows up, but the it just sits there and refuses to continue booting.

Toshiba L305D (Laptop)

AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60

3GB RAM

ATI X1250 Integrated

1280x800 resolution / 60Hz

Any ideas? I can still boot into the previous version without issue.

I've got the same CPU and have had issues using x64 OSs...I just stick with x32 :-/

I know! Check your BIOS and see if there are any x64 settings. Have you consulted the Ubuntu Forums yet? They're helpful too :) (I spend a good bit of time there too)

You should be able to at the grub menu select the prior kernel.... from there you should be able to diagnose the problem.

also check for a bug at launchpad-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu

that and should you not find your bug-- please don't forget to report it-- so that others can help you work the issues out.

So what you are saying is that it boots (no problem with the kernel there) but it doesn't load the Xserver?

Have you tried leaving the system for a few minutes - my system had a problem where it seemed to freeze, but then after a few mins it loaded. Turned out I needed to pass some additional perameters when booting to avoid this.
