Star Ratings need to go

Recommended Posts

I have also had the same concerns as you. But I think there is a better alternative.

You can have one five star rating for the content itself, and another for the "quality" of the article. Very often we have articles which are well written but are not appealing to a majority of the members, and as a result gets 1 star ratings which might be misleading to other viewers.

Of course it still doesn't stop "dweebs" from submitting 1 star ratings.

How ironic. THIS thread was rated 1/5. I agree with shift though, I barely notice the ratings--only in news posts.

It's super annoying and enough to put people off posting on neowin - when some dweeb goes around rating every thread a 1 star.

/end of thought

I don't take notice of them enough to give a view on this, however, it is because i don't take much notice of them, that i feel they should go. I'm sure many other people on Neowin also don't take any notice of them and those that do, don't tend to take them seriously.

The answer is always the same, "Just ignore them" but apparently quite a few members are having a damn hard time at that. New threads are created constantly and people are moaning about it inside the thread as well. They aren't even a proper representation of the actual quality of the thread, people just rate after their fanboyism and whether they like thread starter or not - Such a daft system. Plus the other half of the members say they don't even take notice ... then I ask, what is the point?

Just remove the damn thing and rid Neowin of this plague.

Back in the day it happened to all my topics for a stretch, like EVERY topic I made.

I finally convinced the staff to look into it, which I was grateful of. In the end I actually got a PM from a Supervisor asking if it was possible a real life friend of mine knew I was on NW, someone I had maybe fallen out with? As there was something like 12-14 dupe accounts made that were just voting my topics 1 star, probably stemming from 1 or 2 members.

Of course it was never explained to me who the culprit(s) was, but I'm telling everyone this as an example, voting is not "anonymous". I think the devs need to do some digging to track the votes, but they can.

However they are clearly not going to do that and waste their time for one or two instances of it, my case was different as it had gone on for weeks/months. There's even an "Audioboxers Mother" account going on NW ( https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showuser=255096 ), someone made it to PM me and smack talk. Yeah, it's true, being a part of the GH exposes you to some real immaturity heh :/

Ratings IMO should only really be used in the movie section, or any other forum sections specifically for topics made for ratings based on media. In the normal forums it just causes people to lose the plot if their threads get torched. However really everyone should just ignore it, and I do as well now, but every so often someone blows the lid, like this topic. It's true, it doesn't feel "great" when you think some douche is out to get you [rating topics 1 star that are in no way worthy of a rating], but this is a forum, the internet masks peoples identity, get used to idiots, or "normal" people acting like idiots online.

I'm more concerned about the user ratings on profiles.

I think it can have quite a negative effect on self-esteem and is not constructive for the user at all, it's just plain hurtful :D

I'm the sort of person that likes to correct people when I know they are in the wrong (as well as learning about things myself). Since I have become more active in the forums and had debates with people (sometimes intense, but civil, debates :D) explaining to them they are in the wrong just so I am able to inform them and give them some useful knowledge, my user rating went down from 5 stars to 2 stars :/

While it doesn't really matter, I feel quite embarrassed that people see 2 out of 5 stars on my profile when they look there :/ and it's all because users who I reply to cannot admit when they are wrong and get offended if you say they are wrong

I always admit when I am wrong, even if I was sure I was right, I also do my research on things.

I know it's not too major, but this is one thing that annoys me greatly and makes me want to post less, to be honest.

I do, however, fine thread ratings useful, if users used them properly.

Coming from a guy who has only two stars... :(

Maybe Neowin.net doesn't love me....

In RWI at least, there are a few people that deserve low ratings with almost every single thread that they start.

I've just rated you 5 stars! ;) I've seen you around the forum in places such as the Windows 7 threads and, I think, some Internet Explorer ones and your opinions seem to be similar to mine.

You deserve more than 2 ;)

Again, though, I just wish user ratings didn't exist :/

Are there visible ratings in real life? Thought not. How do you cope?

There aren't visible ratings in real life. Shouldn't that mean there is no need for visible ratings here?

I find it slightly humiliating that if somebody I know in real-life looks at my profile (it could happen as many of my friends know I am active on Neowin) then they will see 2/5 stars and they will not know it is because I do not shy away from explaining to people when they are wrong about things or causing intellectual debate.

Again, it isn't the end of the world, but it is enough to make me and others consider shying away and not posting as much.

What benefit do user ratings actually provide? Please explain to me Joel :)

The mere thought of that sends chills down my spine.

Don't you dare bring that topic up again! I'd rather not think about it

So half the people don't take notice of them and the other half want to see them gone. Nobody is saying (at least in any great number) they want them to stay?

So NW's solution is to keep them, cause obviously thats what people want?!

:p

But yeah this topic comes up all the time, I'd like to see them gone but NW won't/can't remove them so we've just gotta ignore them.
