DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 28, 2009 Well now people are asking for them to be removed and you guys won't give people what they want? And I don't care about the ratings (Y)
Frank
Well now people are asking for them to be removed and you guys won't give people what they want? And I don't care about the ratings (Y) In my experiences it goes a bit like this. Members ask for a feature... we give it to them Other members form a group and decide that feature isn't needed or wanted, so we take it away Original member group comes bitching because it is no longer there The never ending cycle. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 28, 2009 I bet and certainly agree its frustrating for you guys, but if something is being abused, shouldn't you take it away? Or at least meet us half way and remove it from the sub-forums where it is being abused.
+M2Ys4U Subscriber¹ Posted January 28, 2009 Subscriber¹ Share Posted January 28, 2009 I use the star ratings as they're intended. An interesting or correct thread usually gets 5, a stupid or blatantly incorrect thread gets a 1.

Like Audioboxer stated, if you really think you are being targeted send a PM to a Supervisor. As long as you aren't complaining because one of your threads is at one star we will look into it. Voting is not anonymous and can be looked into and action will be taken if it is determined that you are being targeted.

An interesting or correct thread usually gets 5, a stupid or blatantly incorrect thread gets a 1. They also have different meaning for me in 2 sections: Jokes & Funny Stuff: Funny jokes get a 5 first time repost get a 3 and really bad jokes / old jokes get a 1 that aren't funny anymore and movie ratings: a good movie with 9 or 10 / 10 gets a 5 7 or 8 / 10 gets a 4 and so on. Voting is not anonymous and can be looked into and action will be taken if it is determined that you are being targeted. Best thing you can do really. But it works on the basis that you actually see a trend of abuse, and don't just start PMing mods because one or two of your topics is voted low. If you create a lot of topics, you're bound to come across some with low votes. However if you get into my position where you had someone voting everything you post, even "harmless" news topics, that's worth questioning. I'm under the impression the ratings are either on or off for the board. Or I presume the staff would have had serious discussions about disabling them in some areas in the past. They also have different meaning for me in 2 sections:Jokes & Funny Stuff: Funny jokes get a 5 first time repost get a 3 and really bad jokes / old jokes get a 1 that aren't funny any more and movie ratings: a good movie with 9 or 10 / 10 gets a 5 7 or 8 / 10 gets a 4 and so on. Yeah ratings are essential for such sections. I actually browse through jokes and what not based on ratings sometimes, as you really can't tell how good a joke is going to be just from a title. Where the "issue" [not everyone cares] arises is in more opinionated forums where it can be seen as essentially "trolling" for mass 1 star voting. Calum Veteran Posted January 29, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 29, 2009 People asked for them; we hacked them in before IPB offered it. Seriously, if it causes you pain to see your profile or thread rated badly, get out more. I don't think anybody said it causes them "pain". That is a very strong word. I am just annoyed that rating a user serves no purpose because if you disagree with someone, they will probably rate you low, making your overall count lower. This defeats the whole purpose of a discussion as people are just going to abuse the system. If you disagree with people and discuss/debate issues, no matter how much you help others and no matter how knowledgeable you are, you could still well end up with a 1 or 2 star user rating. 1) This defeats the purpose. 2) You get people like this who think it serves some purpose (which it would if people actually rated a user for what they are and not just for disagreeing with them once or twice): Stop iTrolling. Simple as that. ;)I love the ratings. Gives me a head up to the thread author and sometimes the content.

ATGC
Make it a sub only feature.
tiagosilva29
Personally, I never understood ratings as there's no way to know what is being specifically evaluated.
EnzoFX
A sound solution is to only allow ratings to members that have been Neowin for some time... So like earned ratings. This should stop a lot of fake accounts from taking over.
-Alex-
I'm more concerned about the user ratings on profiles.I think it can have quite a negative effect on self-esteem and is not constructive for the user at all, it's just plain hurtful :D I'm the sort of person that likes to correct people when I know they are in the wrong (as well as learning about things myself). Since I have become more active in the forums and had debates with people (sometimes intense, but civil, debates :D) explaining to them they are in the wrong just so I am able to inform them and give them some useful knowledge, my user rating went down from 5 stars to 2 stars :/ While it doesn't really matter, I feel quite embarrassed that people see 2 out of 5 stars on my profile when they look there :/ and it's all because users who I reply to cannot admit when they are wrong and get offended if you say they are wrong  I always admit when I am wrong, even if I was sure I was right, I also do my research on things. I know it's not too major, but this is one thing that annoys me greatly and makes me want to post less, to be honest. I do, however, fine thread ratings useful, if users used them properly. +1 Edited February 24, 2009 by -Alex-
+shift. MVC Posted February 24, 2009 MVC Share Posted February 24, 2009 True, but at the same time if your self esteem is low enough to be affected by Neowin user profile ratings then I think the problem stems beyond Neowin.
Panacik
I'm more concerned about the user ratings on profiles. Meh, Neowin changes a lot in the type of users it has and the amount of users. I used to have a 5 star rating, then a 1 then a 3, so it really varies. Who's affected by this so-called 'abuse'? The people who keep creating topics over it and those who reply in them? Great reply DrunknMunky. (Y) Joel, Why are you posting in this section, with nothing other more than sarcastic responses to things? Its not very nice for a mod to post in such as way, especially knowing that it COULD cause people to get upset...
Joel
The people who keep creating topics over it and those who reply in them? Their lives are affected? Or their internet persona takes a hit? Joel,Why are you posting in this section, with nothing other more than sarcastic responses to things? Its not very nice for a mod to post in such as way, especially knowing that it COULD cause people to get upset... Because, the member base is, at heart, a bunch of whiners. "Give us ratings, but if people use them, we'll complain it's abuse." Seriously? What a crock. People bitched for this stuff and now complain that people are using it in a manner they don't like. Find a real problem in this forum, and I'll be so happy to help you. This section has become less about suggestions and more about making the smallest thing for a few members the next great debate. You find it sarcastic; I find it enlightening. No one can actually answer what the ratings do that make them feel so strongly. But we'd better change them, before someone's feelings get hurt. Only the devs can really help you out with the latter. Nice try, equating thread ratings with site problems. I'm sure someone will fall for it. No I have a problem with a Neowin Staff Member caling the membership of Neowin a bunch of Whiners. This has nothing to do with the connectivity issue as you would be of no help with it anyway. For a staff member to openly call the membership names is as I said repulsive and should not be tolerated.
