Gaming Resolutions

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have somem old games that run in 4:3 resolutions, however when displaying on my widescreen monitor, then they are all streched. I'm not sure if this depends on the game or what but is there a way to force the game to display in a 16:9 resolution? If not, is there a way I can make the game run in 4:3 with black bars at the side?

Not sure if Red Alert 2 supports widescreen, but this screenshot (scroll down) seems to allow it to work alright?

I have checked and my game doesn't have a ini file to edit.

Thanks

It depends on the game.. Some games has the ability to tweak custom resolutions and some not.. The forum you linked to yourself has most of the answers, otherwise just google the title and then widescreen.. As for Red Alert 2 i remember i once did it.. But i cannot be arsed to look into it right now tbh

Hmm.

I was looking at those bits after I posted. The game doesn't appear to support widescreen display, but that's because it came out in 2001 odd. I know it would be capable of displaying in widescreen though. I just updated my ATI drivers but I can't see support for fixed aspect scaling. See I only need this on one game, not all games. Not sure if there is a way to do it for a single game?

If you run your screen in DVI there's usually an option in the driver control panel for letterboxing, which solves the problem. Even with that on, some games, especially older/2D ones, just won't letterbox however, so you have a few alternatives :

1) Find a widescreen fix (I've used one for Red Alert 2, it worked fairly well)

2) Find an old CRT screen or other 4:3 display and switch to it as your primary whenever a game won't display properly on 16:10 (that's what I do with old games like Lords of the Realm 2)

3) ... Get used to seeing things stretched.

You forgot the part to "check if your monitor has any options". Like how some have a mode to take a 4:3 resolution, center it, and pillarbox it. Regardless of the driver software. Which is a solution that will work on all games.

I didn't know that existed. It's not available on my screen, in any case. ;)
