Getting a DSLR, need Advice.

Don't buy a D60, it's not worth it. Either get a D40 which is cheaper and just as functional (it's what I use) or spend a few more pennies and get a D80 (personally what I would do) -- other then some more pixels, the D60 doesn't really offer any compelling features over the D40, for the price.

For the focusing system in the body, it's worth it to go D60 over D40.

I'd suggest a D80/90. I've used a Nikon D50 and now a D90 and love them both. When comparing between Canon and Nikon, I definitely suggest you go and hold both cameras. When I was originally shopping for a D50, it was between that and a Canon Rebel. After holding both cameras, the D50 felt a lot better than the Canon, so I opted for Nikon. To me, the Canon camera didn't feel as sturdy as the Nikon one.
