RROD, but then works after turning back on?

Recommended Posts

While downloading the Halo Wars demo, my console (which I would say is making more noise than usual) RROD'd. Black screen, cut out while at the dashboard downloading, full on RROD.

However, when I turned the console back on after about 30 seconds it worked perfectly.

I'm kinda confused about this (obviously) but also am not sure whether I should send it back, because I don't want it to get to microsoft and then for them not to be able to replicate the problem.

I also haven't had this before/done the towel trick/etc.

??

Probably means it is on it's way out!

I wouldn't worry about sending it back, you can't really lose out, if they can't reproduce the problem they will just send it back. If it happens again, just phone them again. The customer is always right ;).

I don't mind so much that it RROD'd (I accounted for that as an inevitability) but that it started working again :p

My previous console got a RROD after a short power outage,1 month later it had the real thing. The towel trick is the worst thing you can do besides hitting it with a hammer.Open the console up,change thermal paste, thermal pads, let it overheat 10-15 min. (being open,DVD drive not connected),let it cool off... after this it works for one more month usually.A real fix is doing BGA reballing too. After this BGA fix, your console will be stronger than new usually. :D

All can be done easy at home except BGA fix, which needs a guy that's good with electronics.

Either that or buy an new Arcade (really cheap) and slap the HDD you have from the previous machine on it.

i would say its on its way out. (and as to the towel trick, really isnt worth it, ive only managed to get a console running for 8hours etc after the towel trick then dies again) X-clamp fix for a longer lasting fix.

*lasted 8months roughly for me* for ?4.99

+1 to on its way out... and I found out the hard way... got the rrod a few times.... one day it just started working again with no issues... naturally once the warranty period ended.... rrod for good.... so i just went out and picked up an arcade for 199... but still annoyed i didnt just send it in at the first signs of problems....

If the 2 fans in the back use too much current (dust on fanblades) the console will also RROD.

I tried to power a third fan using the Lian-Li provided adapter and an extra modified connector.

It worked fine again after removing the third fan, and using a separate poweradapter to power the 120mm in the back.

So maybe in your case the 60mm fans draw too much power, or the console thinks they draw too much. (false positive)

fixed type-o's (need new keyboard.. arrowkeys get stuck sometimes )

The warranty for the RROD is three years. Did you have a launch console?

I think I bought around August 2006, so I should be able to get a fix under warranty.

On the basis of all of you guy's advice, I think I'm going to send it into Microsoft. It's just not worth waiting until it's out of warranty for it to RROD for good.

Thanks :)
