What Am I missing with Halo...?

Recommended Posts

Well, I know Halo is really popular and everything, and theres' a lot of appreciation for the main character, but for some reason I just can't get into any of the games. I've played Halo: Combat Evolved and I recently started playing Halo 3.

And I don't really like any of them, and I kinda think the main character is a bit boring, and very cliched.

I love shooters but I just don't understand why it's so good.

Am I missing something here? I've tried giving them both a chance. I must've played the original Halo 3/4 the way through - and while I do thing Halo 3 is much better in terms of graphics, and action... It's still less fun than most shooters.

This isn't flamebait, and I'm not declaring my opposition just to get some plus points, I'd just like to know why it's THAT good. Because I'm just not seeing it...

I know, it's not everyones cup of tea. But for christ sakes I love shooting games. Especially first person ones.

Did you play Halo 2?

Well just because it is popular doesn't mean everyone has to like it. It has its own share of fans [and haters].

As for the MC, he is a 7 foot armor clad alien killing cyborg bada**... What more could you want from your protagaonist? :p

I never really got why people think Halo is so good either, I completed the first one, skipped the second and played about half way through the third until I got bored.

Maybe not playing the second game has something to do with it?

Well I guess the storyline isn't for everyone.

Not really... I got bored with the first one too, I only ended up completing it because I was doing it in co-op, I wouldn't have bothered if I was playing on single player.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, I just don't see why there's so much hype surrounding it when there's much better (imo) first person shooters available.

I think one of the main reasons Halo:CE is still very popular (and Halo in turn) is the multiplayer. I have seen many non-gamers to join me and my buddies and enjoy fragging each other over Halo Lans. Pure Fun.

About the single player campaign - If you pay attention to the story - it is very engrossing. Even if you don't read books, the clues that the story leaves along the way are real good and engaging.

If (and I'm making up numbers here) 94% of the population enjoy a game, someone has to make up the remaining 6%...

Very true. When I originally played Halo: CE on my XBOX, I had no idea as to what was going on, but I played on through and was never really drawn by it. But since it was the only game I had at that time, I researched a bit about it and my friend introduced me to the novels. Ever since then I became a fanatic of the storyline.

It is something like Star Wars. Not many people get why it is so popular, but if you actually go through the trouble of watching every Episode, cartoon and reading every novel, comic, etc. you will understand the intricacy and inner beauty of the entire series.

I guess Bungie was being criminal by making the SP campaign so short for both Halo 2 and Halo 3. If only they had developed it a bit more...

I like the complete refined package that is Halo games. They get the little things right. I also love the the story which isn't told well at all in the games, read the books. Halo CE didn't tell much so worked better but Bungie screwed up and never done the story well in the other two. People like the background of the Universe which is quite deep for a game.

WATCH THIS

Cinematics from Halo Wars. That's the kinda stuff I hope Microsoft will go for in future Halo games. Awesome.

Oh, and did I mention the awesome soundtrack and great combat chatter? The halo franchise has one of the best audio...ermm...thingies [ :p ] sound engineering [?] in the game industry.

They also have one of the best enemy AI in the industry.

LOL@ Enemy AI, I remember shooting through gimp grunts and midget ones as they stood in line of sight staring like idiots.

FEAR has the BEST enemy AI I have ever encountered. Half life has best Sound Effects, and very good AI.

Halo is just hype and fanboys... MP though is fun, cuss it is/was the very first Xbox Ok F-P

I guess what I have to add to this is maybe you are missing out on the multiplayer. The story for me has always been average but what got me hooked was the multiplayer. When Halo 2 came out last generation it blew away almost anything seen with online multiplayer (console of course). That transitioned into a great experience with Halo 3. Maybe with you not being hooked initially might be of cause for some of your reaction but who knows. Now all the consoles have online play and there are more games with varied types of multiplayer experiences so Halo might not just be your thing.

I think Halo is a good game for what it is a -- a simplified version of most PC FPS games that works well. It's fairly fun (IMO), especially in co-op, but does nothing special. I still think it's a good game, though. One of my 360 favorites. (Y)

Well that is basic Grunt character. They are meant to be stupid. Brute AI is marvelous. I have played the game more than a hundred times and it is because of the fact that the experience is different each time is the reason why I enjoy it, without getting bored too quickly.

Well Half-Life is definitely a legendary game, but in my [may/may not apply to others] opinion, Halo has better overall sound engineering. I mean, seriously, you have a guy [Freeman] who doesn't even talk throughout the entire game!

Halo may have a lot of hype going for it, but there is no denying it lived up to it.

What are you missing? Absolutely nothing. Just another cookie-cutter formula shoot 'em up dead game. How this formula hasn't gone stale in the gaming industry is far beyond me. But you can't argue with sales.

i loved halo 1 and played it to death mainly because it brought shooters to consoles (imo the first time it was properly done anyway) and the split screen co-op was awesome. countless hours playing "the silent cartographer" together :D Though halo 2 an 3 weren't as great singleplayerwise, played halo 2 twice all the way through and finished halo 3 after 2 days and never felt the urge to play it again.

The multiplayer though.. when halo 2 was released i just got an xbox live account so i played it every free minute i had, halo 3 the same at first, but it slowly died off because i now play more games (more money, more spending on games :p) but i can still enjoy it from time to time.

And it's me and my mates' ultimate xbox lan game. :D

FEAR has good AI, but it anything but fantastic, FEAR 2 does have fantastic AI though. Halo CE, for its time, had magnificient AI. It was the first shooter, and still one of the only shooters besides Fear and HL2, where the enemy not only dodged when you did specific things but kept distance, affected other units, etc. The teamwork mentality was already built into the game (kill an elite, grunts go crazy due to losing the leader and strong point of their unit).

In response to the OP, I think Halo just has a specific character that I have grown to love. Already being a sci-fi buff (my favorite sci-fi now has to be Sunshine, best one yet), Halo grabbed me in with just that at first. Then I really dug into the story and found the universe to be extremely detailed and expansive. I would also recommend reading the books and at least finishing the games (If you only got 2/3 through Halo CE, that last third is actually very critical to the game's overall story). And try playing through Halo 2's campaign at least once for story reasons so Halo 3 makes sense a bit.

Other than it really comes down to just what you enjoy playing. I personally hate HL2 for its obscenely slow story progression, crappy puzzle/shooter mix strategy and horribly overhyped AI mechanics. Thats not to say I was never intrigued by the story, which is the main reason I picked it up in the first place, but in the end the game just really wasn't my cup of tea. You might be in the same situation here.

So I take it Halo 2 is where all the questions were answered and all the characters/factions got their backstories and personalities set?

If that's true, it can't hurt to pick it up I guess. It should be dirt cheap by now.

But I just don't like the Master Chief character. He's very corny. Maybe that's the appeal? :o

Never got into the SP of Halo, but MP is good fun with friends. It's the only real decent title with 4 player split screen which can't be ignored at parties.

I used to play Halo on the PC with my friend nearly daily after School.
