Smoking cannabis 'increases the risk of aggressive testicular cancer&#3

Recommended Posts

Smoking cannabis puts men at increased risk of the most aggressive type of testicular cancer, say scientists.

Men who smoked at least once a week or who had smoked since adolescence were twice as likely to develop the disease as those who didn?t use the drug, the U.S. researchers found.

Dr Stephen Schwartz, who led the study, said more research was needed to confirm the link ? and to show why the drug puts men at risk.

?Our study is the first inkling that marijuana use may be associated with testicular cancer, and we still have a lot of unanswered questions,? he said.

?What young men should know is that first, we know very little about the long-term health consequences of marijuana smoking, especially heavy marijuana smoking ? and second, our study provides some evidence that testicular cancer could be one

adverse consequence.

?So in the absence of more certain information, a decision to smoke marijuana recreationally means that one is taking a chance on one?s future health.?

Some 2,100 men are diagnosed with testicular cancer in Britain each year. Most are cured ? and 98 per cent of those diagnosed are still alive after ten years.

The study, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, Washington, looked at all types of testicular cancer. Dr Schwartz interviewed 369 men aged 18 to 44 who had been diagnosed with the disease about their cannabis use.

They compared the results with interviews from 979 randomly chosen men of the same age.

Men who smoked cannabis were 70 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

Men who smoked at least once a week or who had smoked since adolescence were twice as likely to have testicular cancer, they report in the journal Cancer.

The link seemed strongest with a fast-growing malignancy called nonseminoma, which tends to strike early, between the ages of 20 and 35, and accounts for around 40 per cent of all testicular cancer cases.

Although I'm not a weed smoker (or any kind of smoker for that matter), even I can tell you that the results of the study are correlation not causation. The result could technically be reversed to say that men at risk of testicular cancer are more likely to smoke weed. Same result, different conclusion.

This article fails.

Its funny though: This illegal drug may cause testicular cancer while a legal drug such as beer can cause death.

Exactly! There is yet to be a recorded death directly linked to Marijuana.

Statistics can be so stupid, and can be twisted to look anyway a person wants. Like say for example, and this is only an example, say your 25% more at risk to die in a head on collision if you wear white, just cause statistically more people wear wearing white then any other color have died in head on collisions, lol. Now is there any connection? Hell no. So is smoking Marijuana mean your gonna get testicular cancer? Hell no. There could be no link at all between the 2.

Pierre Berton was Canadian Author, who admitted to using Marijuana for 40 years, and lived to the age of 84 without any cancer at all.

Think about how bad the radiation from cellphones are, that people use everyday, or the microwave u zap your food with, or the McDonalds people eat (mmmm)...... And ofcourse, the #1 Killer, Alcohol... oh how I love my alcohol. :)

 Er, there have been 1000's killed over marijuana drug deals.

You make anything illegal where there is a demand for it, and it will end up on the black market, and organized crime will sell it, and people will die because that's the only way to resolve disputes in such a market. Can't really complain to the better business bureau when you get ripped off.

Exactly. I realised you where not saying that only Americans smoke it, but that the English chavs that smoke it start acting like dumb-ass Americans... That said,, is that not just a little bit racist leesmithg?

so it's safe for me then?

Im not saying Marijuana is completely harmless. But there is lots of studies that show it has many benifits. There are tars in Marijuana that you inhale that aren't good for you, which are the same found in cigarettes, and even in higher amounts. However, your not suppose to hold in the smoke more then 3 seconds, at which time the THC (active ingredient in Marijuana) has been absorbed into yer lungs, and after that your only getting the bad tars, and depriving your brain of oxygen. One of the things with Marijuana though, is I've read that it opens the avioli in your lungs which means less toxins get stuck in your lungs, and can even clean out your lungs, which basically counters the side effects of the tar. So basically I'd say smoking cigarettes or cigars is more harmful then Marijuana.

It certainly didn't slow down Michael Phelps any from winning all those gold metals at the Olympics.
