[Idea]Knowledge base section

I was thinking of an idea for a solutions types selection to most commonly answered questions for users ( who are not the most computer competent). In it would be posted, answers to most problem9s) we see being asked on the forums, hardware and software wise.

ripgut has a point - a dedicated Knowledge Base forum (perhaps with a few subforums - Hardware, Software, Networking etc) with carefully selected answers to common questions is a good idea. Have staff and MVC review the answers as well as make necessary changes as technology changes.

Physicsforums.com has "Library" in which users can look up information to questions they think they might have, sure they still get a lot of threads with commonly asked questions but what they did is make the library display similar topics at the bottom of each thread. Perhaps we can do something of the sort.

I think it's a pretty neat idea, I do think it would be hard judging what goes in/stays out. Also, what would be displayed? The actual thread where the problem was resolved or a simple explanation of the problem and beneath the resolution?

There is a system over at programmingtalk.com on their forum, that when your question is answered, you can select the post that was most helpful to solving the problem, and give thanks or "kudos" (not the neowin member) to the person.

Maybe a selected "thanks" post could be green or some sort of icon indicator to show how helpful it was? This would be more of an IPB tweak

That sounds also similar to Experts Exchange. Works in the same way, that a post is marked as an 'accepted solution' - maybe the system could work so it submits that solution into the system for review by Staff? If accepted it's then added?

Sounds OK, but how many will notice Tech FAQ ?

Who gets to contribute answers ?

Probably will disappoint those who enjoy helping out, in the future, if most answers are already listed.

And I can see the smart-alecy replys now: 'Read the friggin' Knowledge Base, newb'.
