Photoshop 7.0

Question

Right then, I'm stuck. You see I'm currently designing a logo using the brush tool and I can create perfect striaght lines and I'm noting the precise length of each one. But, how do I make a perfect curve (as in, I can specify exactly how long the curve is from point-to-point). I've tried looking at tutorials on the net with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

Grab the pen tool tool... Click once where you want the curve to start, then click and hold where you want it to end, and drag around to make the curve (you see how it's made when you do it). Choose the color you want the line to be as the foreground color, and go into the brush tool (don't worry, your curve won't go away ;)) and select how wide and soft you want the line to be using the brush settings. Now go into the layers window and click on the right-most tab - paths, and click the little black arrow in the very top right of the window and click stroke path, and choose the the brush.

A couple of things - make sure the pixels/inch of your image is high enough, otherwise the curve will look like shat. And after you've stroked the path, just click the empty space in the path window to get rid of seeing it. Also, if the pixels per inch of your image is high enough, you might choose to use the pencil instead of the brush, as the pencil is crisper, but at lower pixels/inch the brush is smoother.

Hey Evil_Dragon,

I tried what you suggested although whenever I click on that arrow, the "Stroke Path" option is grayed out. I'm still playing around with it to see where I'm going wrong.

hmm, I thought I did that. I mean here's precisely wot I did as an example:

- File/New

- Clicked on pen tool

- Click a point, clicked another point and dragged around

- Went to Paths/Black Arrow (and everythings greyed out)

I'm at work right now so I don't have Photoshop open... but is it possible your image is set to a mode other than RGB?

Many functions are disabled if you're using Greyscale, Duotone modes, etc.

neither, it says "make selection" though. and also, when i click the brush tool and attempt to draw anything i'm prevented from doing so with the msg:

"could not use the brush tool because the content of the layer is not directly available."

Yes go to image/mode/make sure "RGB" is checked

I got it - You're trying to draw on the background layer. Either make a new layer, or unlock the background before doing this.

[Edit]Correction - You can't unlock the background, just make a new layer.

ahhh, bingo.... lots of things don't work when the background layer is italicized. You can unlock it actually, if you just double click on it and click "OK" to rename it to "Layer 0"

Right, but that's not unlocking it... That's changing it into a normal layer. :p ;)

Also, one of the BEST things in photoshop is the help/photoshop help/search "curves"

It has a FULL and easy to read tutorial on how to do it!

Photoshop has help files?

heh, j/k. Been using since version 3..... I remember when they introduced Layers and multiple Undo's. That was the sweetest thing ever

nope, i made this curve with the pen tool - but i can't change the width/thickess of the curve created.

No... The pen tool creates the path. When you stroke it, that's what makes the curve that you'll use. And to change the thickness of the stroke, you just change the thickness of what it gets stroked with (the brush).
