DrunknMunky Veteran Posted February 13, 2009 Veteran Share Posted February 13, 2009 By Patrick Garratt Microsoft is to open its own shops, according to this Reuters report, in what is probably safely termed as ?doing an Apple?. David Porter, a former DreamWorks exec, has been hired to head up the chain. It?s not known if this is a US-only thing as yet, and Microsoft hasn?t said yet how many stores it?s looking to open, or when, or which products would be available.Source: VG247[/url] I hope these make their way over :woot: UK :woot: I won't have to visit the Apple store every day at lunch now. I'll just work at the:DS:ptore :D :p

what
First thing that popped into my mind?"Why, Dear God, Why?" Just a hunch this, but maybe it's to sell Microsoft's products?
gamerboy
I'd hate to work in customer service there. Everyday people will come in complaining about hardware failures and other errors lol. Would be sweet to work as a salesman or something like that tho.

+Mystic MVC Posted February 13, 2009 MVC Share Posted February 13, 2009 First thing that popped into my mind?"Why, Dear God, Why?" Why wouldn't they want to sell some of the products directly? I'm assuming it is supposed to be Apple Store esque. A place where people can go to look trendy and cool...
Fred Derf Veteran Posted February 13, 2009 Veteran Share Posted February 13, 2009 They have Zune's to compete with Apple's iPods. They have Xboxes to compete with Sony's Playstations. I'd wager it would contain mostly entertainment and consumer electronic devices. One of those lifestyle-type stores.
neoadorable
good initiative, at least it'll generate some jobs. i applaude this, but just hope it doesn't end up in Gateway Country land. i've been hankering for a 360-themed coffee shop. you know, the Kantos Burger special, the Kudos breakfast and the Controller White ice cream. maybe now it'll happen. kuballer10
i'm assuming it'll have all of the new models of things (like jasper's) so they can forgo the complaints and just tell them to send it to microsoft's repair place, unless they are going to have repair places in the stores. Valerus
Well if anything it should cut out the middle man and sell products at a lesser cost than BB and such
Flantec
I am with robpears on this one. There is NO reason for Microsoft to have its own stores. What are they going to stock it with? Zunes, Xboxes, keyboards & mice? Does Microsoft make any other hardware I am forgetting? At best, this would be enough inventory for a SMALL mall kiosk!!!! As far as software, there is no need for a mostly brick & mortar software store (especially one that only sells Microsoft software). Just ask Egghead, Software etc, etc... Any former mostly-software store either went under, or went to the web exclusively... AND, there would be NO discounts from other places because of the overhead costs of running a store... The don't have to sell only MS hardware. They can sell hardware that runs MS OSes. WinMo phones, desktops and laptops, netbooks, etc. Somewhere for people to try a Surface. Not many people are going to buy those sight unseen.

Look at Apple, they have stores all over. Yeah sure they have "hardware" but it's only the case. On the inside it's Intel, Nvidia, etc. So you're really just buying this flashy OS and iLife maybe. And your iPod and iPhone, your Apple keyboard and mice; MS has their own brand of that too.

Gary2MBz
I hope they open one where Hollywood's CircuitCity is, there is nothing of value left. They are still selling Norton Systemworks 2005 lmao
The Teej
I'd definitely buy Windows 7 from there - you can guarantee it'll all go fine if there are issues. However, as for XBOX 360 and its games... I'd probably still want to buy from GAME, unless they pull off some much cheaper deals. Either way, it's yet another store that may offer some decent competition in the gaming retail market.

I'm all for it to be honest, it would give a lot of people a really good opportunity to test drive operating systems, sure you can do it already in other stores but there could be employee's designated to showing off software (Y)

Yea, if Apple actually had geniuses there. I've read some problems people have had there with their MacBook Pros and iMacs. I go by it and also my brother-in-law had problems with his iPhone and they wouldn't replace it or even fix it for him. Grove's Apple Store in West Hollywood.
