Not sure if this will go against any rules for any reason. Im sorry if it does, but it is meant just as a random question because it just popped in my head, so please close/delete if it is not wanted here, but:

Neobond,

Do you ever have times or days when you come to Neowin and think "to hell with it"? Like, when you see a bunch of people whining or complaining about things on Neowin and the way it should be run and the fact that there are sometimes 2 very large groups on both sides who are loving the Neowin way and who hate the Neowin way?

What inspires you to hold back and not go on a mad banning spree or a bitching sprea about those who constantly moan about the mods or just other Neowin users in general?

How do you manage to keep calm?

I realise you have a real staffing system in place, so you dont have to worry about this stuff so much, but you still frequently post in all sections, so must see some of the moaning that goes on, so i wonder how you manage to hold back from going crazy?

Perhaps im just an inpatient person... which is why i dont run a forum of my own

I for one though, salute you for the great job you do with Neowin and the great restraint you have. (Y)

Rich

would sending him a pm be more suitable?

I thought about that, and you know, your right, however, i wouldnt know if i get a reply from a PM. Plus it might have come across more strange had it been directly to him.

Perhaps i should change it so it open to the whole staff?

he told me once that everytime someone complains, he kicks a cat....

jk

but yeah, there is quite a bit of staffing involved here to help keep things in line, hopefully he will respond :)

I would imagine Neobond seeings a minority moaning (as it is a minority) and then he looks at the statistics on Neowin and looks at the traffic and then sits back and thinks "yeeeehaaaa" :D

Neowin has grown so much over the past year (in both the news section and even the forums) and it is one of (if not the) most popular technology forums on the Internet. Probably one of the most popular forums actually.

I imagine this minority doesn't really bother Neobond as a lot of them are just trolls who will complain for the sake of it. Either that or they have just not thought about the benefits this forum/news website offers and the fact that Neobond, Redmak and other staff provide this service for absolutely no cost to us.

Of course I am guessing though ;)

In a word, the staff structure.

Up until about 2002/3 I was very active with moderating Neowin and steering it in the direction I wanted to achieve, the userbase grew and grew and it became necessary to install a larger staff group. By adding "Supervisors" in 2004 many of the moderation duties were transferred to them which resulted in lower blood pressure and general calmness throughout the empire :p

I also understand very well that this is an Internet community, and shouldn't be compared to something I'd expect in a real world social gathering. Having that understanding from the get go helps a lot too and is probably the reason our staff group is quite good and is a tight nit group that has a long history with the site (unlike staff that come and go for a period of months, ours are generally years on staff).

It's true there are a lot of idiots out there, but they usually get "found out" by the community and staff quite quickly, for a site of 8+ years we've had it relatively easy compared to some of the stuff I've seen elsewhere (where one or more members are left to destabilize the community and/or recruit for his own site for example).

Beer helps a lot too. :D

No rule breaking, but probably better suited here than General Discussion

If the real world gathering was anything like the Internet Community, then i would fear for the direction the world is going lol.

after being here for a number of years, i admit i have seen a lot of changes and different attitude in staff, but the main thing i have noticed is how you cant please everyone.

It seems that to please one group, you must disgruntle another and you wil never win either way.

With the few on here that seem to have started poping their heads up recently, saying how some mods and admins are power freaks etc, i do feel that your whole team are very even and fair with all users, regardless of weather their belief is the opposite to their own.

The ONLY time i have found people to get upset by moderation, is when they got a warn, for their own wrong doing, which is, really, their own fault.

Anyway. I can see this thread has kind of run its course now and as no other direction to go really, other than downward, so i request this thread please be closed.
