So I'm considering getting a modded 120GB HDD made by a friendly Neowinian.

My question is, do you think it is worth it?

I could buy a 60GB Starter kit and have the peace of mind that I won't ever get banned from XBL.

OR

I could spend about ?20 less and get double the storage capacity, plus i don't need the extras in the 60GB Starter kit. BUT will MS roll out the banhammer for those with the modded WD HDDs in the future?

So, is it worth it?

I don't want this thread to be closed for talking about cracking hardware or anything, this topic is frequently discussed on here and can be done legitimately, I think, if you own an MS 120GB HDD. I don't want to discuss any how-tos in this thread as that could be taking it to far, I just want to see people's opinion on whether or not it's worth it - to help me decide!

Thanks,

Richard.

Deffo mate,

i did it a few months back, best thing you can do, costs half the price and works like a charm, i backed up everything on the drive and restored to the larger drive all worked fine and was back up and running with all saves and achievements in tact, in my opinion definitely worth doing, its extremely unlikely you will get banned from xbox live mines worked fine ever since

lol, what risks? the only thing you can put on a larger HDD is stuff you have bought off XBL, or games you own and want to decrease load times.....theres no risk involved

in australia a 60gb starter pack (60gb HDD, 3 months of XBL and a headset) is worth $140 AUD. Now, a 120gb Western Digital Bevs drive cost me 80 dollars.

mmmm...easy choice man

DO IT!!!!

I did mine TODAY.

All I did was create a bootable USB Drive with HP utility manager and placed the DOS app and hddss file in the flash drive's root (PM for details) and unplugged all hard drives apart from my new 120gb 2.5" one. After this i booted into DOS and typed the flash command to flash the 120gb drive with the hddss file. After this I formatted my drive on the xbox 360 and tried to connect the 20gb to the PC to back up files using the recommended software.

However the program froze on start up every damn time I tried, so I copied all of my game saves and gamertags to a memory card and then transferred them all back to the new 120gb drive on the xbox ^_^

Just gotta download all the DLC again, i'll download it as I need it. Obviously you could just back up the original data on the PC and move it to the new 120gb hdd but it just wouldn't work for me :/

There's always a small risk of being banned, a load of my friends have used "WDGWD1200BEVS" in theirs without problems - however, one of them recently got banned (apart from the HDD, the console wasn't modded).

Personally I'd still go for the 120gb because I can't stand the jet-like noise of the 360 so I copy all my games to the HDD, I don't use LIVE very much though so I wouldn't really be bothered if I got banned.

He meant modding a Western Digital Hard drive to use for the 360.

Oh right, I didn't know if Kodeine meant creating an internal hard drive or something, due to him saying ''but to me the risk is too big to be worthwhile.''

Sorry for the confusion.

It's pretty obvious that he most likely meant modding the western digital hard drive and was referring to the risk of getting banned from live, since that's what the thread is about.

Nervermind.

Sorry to double post, but when MS do ban, is it the console or the gamertag that would be banned, i.e. could I buy a new console and still have my saves, achievements, dlc etc.?

DO it. Do it now :)

I've used a WD 320GB BEVT Hard drive and it worked flawlessly. So you could use that drive theoretically. Also, check out xbox-scene on the forum for a list of supported drives.

I changed my mind and decided to go for a second hand 120GB HDD, just because there's always the risk that MS will ban duplicated HDD signatures in the future.

After reading around online, i see that a lot of people say that MS will never do this, and besides, it's not really piracy, it's just modding and you only need to pirate a small piece of MS's code. But although this makes sense to me I know that companies etc. do not have the same attitude. Although you are getting more storage and so you can download more content that you buy from MS, they make so much money that perhaps they would rather make a stand against modders and pirates.

So have you got 320GB of space now, less whatever it is that the firmware etc. takes up, I think it's 7GB but could be wrong.

I'm sure that you can only do this mod for HDDs that MS have released an official version of, i.e. 20, 60, 120?!

That's correct, 320gb wont be available to the user as there isn't an official 320gb drive, well a 320gb hddss file :p
