snugglepuffle
Hackers target Xbox Live playersXbox Live is being targeted by malicious hackers selling services that kick players off the network. The booting services are proving popular with players who want a way to get revenge on those who beat them in an Xbox Live game. The attackers are employing data flooding tools that have been used against websites for many years. Microsoft is "investigating" the use of the tools and said those caught using them would be banned from Xbox Live. "There's been a definite increase in the amount of people talking about and distributing these things over the last three to four weeks," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at Facetime Communications. Ricardo Gil
From the source: If hackers can discover the IP address of whoever is hosting a game they can employ many of the attacks that have been used for years against websites, said Mr Boyd. So basically BBC had a slow news day...

Trong
From the source:So basically BBC had a slow news day... I know on Halo, it's pretty easy for people to force host for a friend. From there, they can just have the host IP flood people and kick them off XBL. It's illegal but they do it anyway. :\
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted February 22, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted February 22, 2009 From the source:So basically BBC had a slow news day... Thanks for finding that, saved me a read :) It is extremely hard, if not impossible to find out someones IP from a game over Xbox Live... Chances of you getting the boot is very very slim

Chances of you getting the boot is very very slim Errm, if its a Peer to Peer game, all you have to do is look in your Outgoing connections log in your Router. Pretty sure I've seen the IP's of people in there in the past.

Chances of you getting the boot is very very slim Using zone alarm you can figure out IP Addresses over xbox live, because it logs every connection to/from, and asks you to allow them. It's very simple actually... Anything is possible man ;)
+Mystic MVC Posted February 22, 2009 MVC Share Posted February 22, 2009 This has been known for a while and just one of many hacks used for Halo. I can't believe some people go to that lengths just to say "yeah I beat you guys" when they can employ so many different "advantages" or just straight up hacks. SmashedSpotlight
The booting services are proving popular with players who want a way to get revenge on those who beat them in an Xbox Live game. Talk about being a sore loser. I mean really, grow up, it's just a game. That's the point of trash talking after the game too :D
Arith_Lexin
I can't say much about sore losers I am one but I wouldn't go to that extent over a stupid game I just get a bit sulky especially if the person who challenged me is of I higher level but I kind of grew out of the sore loser stage and more okay I lost but I am going to train up and beat u next time
Advent
The booting services are proving popular with players who want a way to get revenge on those who beat them in an Xbox Live game. Wrong. They do it because they can, simple as that. To win yes, to get revenge after being beaten, no. The attackers are employing data flooding tools that have been used against websites for many years. Botnet Microsoft is "investigating" the use of the tools and said those caught using them would be banned from Xbox Live. I would say they're investigating, but if someone boots other people offline enough in a short period they will get either their Xbox banned from XBL or their account suspended for x time. "There's been a definite increase in the amount of people talking about and distributing these things over the last three to four weeks," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at Facetime Communications. People have been using botnets on XBL and spreading/teaching people since 2004. There is no increase in people talking about the distribution in the last four weeks. Thanks for finding that, saved me a read :)It is extremely hard, if not impossible to find out someones IP from a game over Xbox Live... Chances of you getting the boot is very very slim Actually, it is extremely simple. Though what someone mentioned about Zone Alarm, your half right. Also, the chances of you getting booted (DDoS/DoS/SYN/SSYN) is quite high. When I clicked on this thread I though it was going to be about all the people getting their accounts jacked(stolen), hmm guess no one cares about that. Instead BBC seems to think script kiddies are hackers.
spenser.d
^^^Well XBL is closed in such a way that I don't think hackers would be able to jack accounts through the console itself, but probably only online through Xbox.com, and that's probably also pretty hard, except for getting those accounts owned by idiots who'll give their pw away to any legit-looking website. That's why nobody cares about that - it's not common. The thread title is a bit misleading though. -Spenser
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted February 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted February 22, 2009 DDoS attacks on Xbox LIVE users isn't "new". It's been happening for quite awhile now. All the hacker would need to direct the DNS attack is your IP address and a decent botnet.

And for the part about only the idiots that fall for phishing scams, heh well that is how most people become victims. Though don't think XBL is so closed as you think it is and it is hard to get ones account. ie. Know the stupid rapper Soulja Boy (or w.e) His account was taken around the end of last year. Though you'd think his password/secret question would be something easy or simple being he got jacked, nope it had misc. symbols. DDoS attacks on Xbox LIVE users isn't "new". Dunno if that was directed at me or you were just putting it out there, either way ... I know, heh.
