Popcorned1
Somone in the general forum rated everything 1 star :\ Possible to reset them?
Joel
Why, did the threads become illegible because of it?
mrchetsteadman
Sometimes I won't click on a joke if it only has one star. Sometimes I skip over other threads because of the rating.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted February 21, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted February 21, 2009 A topic about this appears almost monthly. Neowin won't change the way the system works and/or cant [it's asked in every one of these topics] - Therefore best to ignore ratings outside of the jokes/media forums. Pay more attention to topic titles, then topic content, rather than star rating.
TheRealDave
/me goes to 1 star every topic on the forum. There, happy now?

Popcorned1
Joel, then you just admitted the ratings system is nothing but a waste of space and resources.
Richard Hammond
So other people tell you what to read, instead of it just being an opinion? Well i thought that was the whole point of the ratings, if a thread isnt worth reading then i dont have to waste my time and bandwidth clicking on it. Panacik
Why, did the threads become illegible because of it? So other people tell you what to read, instead of it just being an opinion? Why are you being so sarcastic and rude? Why not be more polite and simply explain that it may not be worth the extra work to reset them all etc? It would make the forums far more pleasent if everyone was a little more polite to each other, rathe than acting all hoity toity towards people. CrashG
Personally I don't pay attention to them at all. If the topic sounds interesting then I click it, if not, then I don't. I could care less whether it has 5 stars or 1 stars or no stars.
Joel
Joel, then you just admitted the ratings system is nothing but a waste of space and resources. The masses demanded it, the masses moan about it being used. Yeah, it's a waste. Well i thought that was the whole point of the ratings, if a thread isnt worth reading then i dont have to waste my time and bandwidth clicking on it. Again; other people decide what you click on? Why are you being so sarcastic and rude? Why not be more polite and simply explain that it may not be worth the extra work to reset them all etc? It would make the forums far more pleasent if everyone was a little more polite to each other, rathe than acting all hoity toity towards people. What part of the weekly response is 'hoity-toity'? These threads about ratings should be enshrined as static proof of why we don't exactly embrace every random 'suggestion' to make the forum a better place. The flippin' ratings only exist because they were asked for, and there have been nothing but complaints about them since. This membership is so fickle, it's unbelievable. As its said by others... dont like it, dont post. You have the power to sticky posts i believe, so maybe make it a sticky and move on? However, you are sounding like you really dislike being a member of Neowin.

Well i thought that was the whole point of the ratings, if a thread isnt worth reading then i dont have to waste my time and bandwidth clicking on it. ^^Pretty much. This forum is massive if no one has noticed and to click every topic would be a waste of time. Plus I have other things going on so I can't be wasting hours reading topics. If a title catches my eye, I might click it because it caught my eye, but normally I just avoid it depending on the rating.
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted February 21, 2009 Veteran Share Posted February 21, 2009 The only time I ever look at a thread's rating is after someone complains about it. Honestly, I don't see the reason to base your judgement on a mere rating that anyone can lie about. The rating system doesn't have an adverse effect on Neowin. And because of that, nothing will be done about the "1 star rated threads".
Richard Hammond
Again; other people decide what you click on? Pretty much thats why ratings exist, if i want to watch a movie i look at reviews and if it has a high enough rating i go and see it at the cinema otherwise i wait for the dvd to rent it, just like Neowin threads if i like the title of a thread i see that its ranked high i am more likely to go click on it, thats not people deciding what i click on thats me deciding wether its worth clicking on seeing as how other people didnt think it was worth their time. No need to be arsey about it....

shockz
AFAIK the only way to do this would be to go into the database and remove the ratings for each of those threads... too much time to do... especially if the person goes through and rates them 1 again. I agree, it would be pointless to bother sorting out, as it would likely just become abused again. There are a lot of people to please. You can't make them all happy, but you can make them all angry if you keep on posting with that attitude. Exactly. It sounds unfair, but an adverage member has a chance of getting away with that attitude whereas a mod or admin etc would, and in this case has, been shot down because of it. They are representing the forums, and acting in such a way does not bode well for the overall image of Neowin.
+Gary7 Subscriber² Posted February 21, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted February 21, 2009 The rating system should be canned. It is a waste of time and space. I look at a topic by what the title is and not by a worthless star rating.

ATGC
If someone went 1 star spamming, then 1-2 people just rate the threads higher, bring it 3-star or 4-star, respectively. Problem solved. Keep the rating system, its needed in J/F section, i.e. to vote down afusion's threads. Where does it say a mod has to be a carebear? Not everyone wants to be a hippy, like you Rich. Peace, Love, Harmony. :o
ToneKnee
I think topic ratings should be left to users who have got a lot of posts or subscription. While I'm not saying that all heavy posters/subscription users are all angels, I think it would be more fair that someone who has been around here for awhile could rate a thread, at least then I would appreciate the rating more and rather not some idiot fanboy (example) in the gaming forums rating everything 1. It's really stupid a childish.
