Windows peak

Recommended Posts

I think I've got the name right, here is what I want to do. I want to disable the peak feature when you mouse over a thumb nail pop up on the taskbar, turning off desktop preview does not do this. While I know a lot of Windows seven users like the peak feature I find it distracting since it's a feature I will not be utilizing, I like the thumb nail feature it's self and the other functionality that comes with it and the taskbar, but I would like the ability to disable peak the same as you can for desktop preview when mousing over the show desktop button.

Is this possible?

After a little more thought I've decided I need to add some clarification to what I'm asking about. specifically I'm talking about the disappearing effect for the other windows. I don't mind the window I'm highlighting coming to the front that's obvious I just don't need the other windows disappearing. I have a two monitor setup so I don't need windows disappearing and reappearing on my other screen every time I mouse over a thumb nail tab in Internet explorer. I hope this explains what I'm trying to do, I know my writing skills are not the best so please bear with me, and thanks for any help.

And just so their is no misunderstandings on this I'll say up front I really like Windows Seven so this is a minor irritant not a major issue.

Right click thumbnail and uncheck preview desktop.

Thanks for the quick reply Pumi, I think I correctly understand what your saying and the preview desktop check box does not affect the thumb nail window previews.

Yes, basically he wants all windows to stay on the screen (instead of going transparent) when he mouses over a thumbnail in the taskbar. That being said, the preview desktop option is for the desktop peek feature......he is looking to disable the transparency of all other windows when he mouses over a thumbnail.

That being said, I dont know if that is possible through normal settings (may be some reg hack though), but I personally would like that feature as well.......I too run multiple monitors and its annoying when you accidentally mouse over a thumbnail to have all your windows disappear for a second.......I would rather have it just make the thumbnail I mouse over the current active window, while leaving everything else fully visible. Granted this makes it less obvious which one is the active window, maybe it could at least be a setting thats out of view of the standard user.

As far as I know, there's a setting to disable this in the performance settings:

System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Uncheck the correct one!

I'm afraid I'm not at my Win7 computer at the moment to be able to tell you the name of the right one, but I don't think it'd be too hard to find it yourselves! Hope that works well enough.

Oh, and the term is 'Aero Peek'! ;) *Chuckles at Brandon*

I believe one of the performance options in the System control panel should cover this, however it may affect other animations / behaviors too. That said, I believe the options have been refined post-Beta, so the appropriate option may not work in the beta build or work the way it will in the RC.

I am a bit confused why you'd want to disable it though... it doesn't actually change the state of your desktop, and just makes it obvious where the window you're hovering over is. I love this on my multi-mon setup at work because it makes it obvious which monitor that window is on.

Oh, and the word is PEEK.

Thank for the help mwpeck, as I said somtimes my writing skills are not what I'd like so maybe now with your explaination my post will be understood better and we can both get an answer.

And for the grammar-spelling nazi's I just reallized I mis-used peak in my title, I meant peek as in aboo not peak as in pikes.

Hello Brandon thanks for the reply and don't take the grammar nazi comment wrong, that was meant to have a smiley beside it but popped up at the top of my post. the performance options do affect other setting I tried that, all I want is to turn off transparency when I mouse over a thumb nail. I do hope this is added in post beta.

I see what your saying here Brandon but I guess the easiest way for me to explain it is that I find the disappearing and reappearing windows distracting and annoying more often than useful. Just a difference in style I guess. Regardless whether this is fixed to my taste or not Windows seven will be my next OS when it comes out.

I want to decrease the time for Show Desktop button which is on right end side.. Currently it takes 3-4seconds for me, when i hover my mouse. I think this is also part of Aero peek which i want to tweak. Any reg hacks

Err, the delay is less than 1 second in the beta.

I am using Beta build (7000) and WDDM 1.0 drivers via Windows Update. Any ideas whats causing the delay.. Just tested it once again but no way, i sense time lapse of 1second

  • 2 months later...

I don't mind the peak feature but I would like to disable it on my second monitor if possible.

For instance, right now I can't use peak without interrupting the TV episode my girlfriend is watching on the TV (my 2nd display). I switch to a new window and if it isn't a instant switch and peak activates it minimizes everything on that display.

Is there any kind of option for this?
