How many spaces do you use after a period when writing?

I use one space while typing.

Besides, if I do it another way the spellchecker will go off. XD

I had a creative business and techinical writing class several years ago, they taught two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. This increases the readers whitespace and hopefully ensures they will continue to read rather than skim.

[edit] After googling a bit it appears most word processors add more space between sentences than if you were going to just add a bunch of random periods. The two space rule probably derived from the old days when people used typewriters. I can't tell any difference but some folks seem to think a single space is larger than two in Word.

Two spaces is grammatically incorrect, so I use one.

Exactly, this is what they teach as this is proper. 2 2 2 2 2 2

Why would you use 2 spaces after a period? It's like putting a space in between word and comma sign! One space all the way!

I was taught 2 but tend to use both depending on whether I'm typing formally or informally.

one space is the new standard.

In the old days of typewriters using only monospaced fonts in which a period occupied as much horizontal space as any other letter, it was standard to double-space after each one to clearly separate out each sentence from the following one. However, when justified variable-width type is set for printing it has always been standard to use only one space between sentences. Modern computers produce type that is more like print, and most modern styles call for only one space after a period. This is especially important if you are preparing a text for publication which will be laid out from your electronic copy. If you find it difficult to adopt the one-space pattern, when you are finished writing you can do a global search-and-replace to find all double spaces and replace them with single spaces.

i, too, was taught to use two spaces, but now i can't stand to use two; the huge gaps created in a body of text when two spaces are used are too distracting.

Two. That's what I was always taught in school and I just graduated high school last year so how can that be wrong?

Exactly.

I took a Keyboarding class back in high school and the program always wanted two spaces after a period.

However, ever since going to University, I stuck with one space after.

Two spaces if it is the end of a sentence; one space elsewhere (like after an abbreviation)...that's what they taught me in school anyways. I've never heard of one space being the 'standard'. Besides, I believe two spaces between sentences makes for easier reading. :)

I showed you the bit about this in the Chicago Manual of Style, why do you persist in failing so?
