Some good games that'll run on my system

Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz

1GB DDR2 RAM

Nvidia 7300LE 256MB (512 with turbocache)

I am not much of a gamer, thus the crappy system. I only play Counter Strike 1.6, but now I'm thinking of playing some better games. I bought COD5, but even though my system passes the minimum requirements, it runs verrry choppy on my PC.

Also, I must tell you, that I have played Gears of War, and even Crysis on ultra low settings on my computer a few years back. But after a few windows formats, many things have changed, for some strange reason.

for eg. I used to play crysis @ 800x600 without any scaling problems, but now if I play ANY game at lower than my native res - 1280x1024, the screen becomes stretchy. Yes, I'm using an LCD monitor, NOT connected through DVI. Also, I clearly remember, I used to play CS1.6 at 1024x768, but one day it became all stretchy and I had to switch the in-game res to 1280.

*ahem* So anyways, try and recommend me some games which will run on my system. I know it's tough to tell, but just try :).

I have already played portal. Though I didn't finish it. But it really is excellent.

EDIT: Also, I need some games which would be fun to play over LAN.

Unreal Tournament 2004. The online community is still alive and kicking, and I've ran it on far worse hardware. Also, a blast to play over LAN.

Counter-Strike: Source will run, TF2 might. CoD4 is highly unlikely (Hey, I got it going on 2Gb and an old Radeon X600).

Yeah, I've heard a lot about UT2004.

After hearing that even COD4 would have difficulty playing on my PC, I'd like to ask that what should I upgrade to play more recent games on my PC?

The graphics card and RAM. (to 2 or 4 gigs)

As your current card is pretty low powered it's likely that your PC doesn't have a power supply unit capable of handling a decent midrange card, so you may need to upgrade that as well. (I couldn't upgrade the PSU with my old Dell and it ended up frying all my hardware because the graphics card used too much power)

The Pentium Ds are also quite old and you'd do much better with a Core 2 Duo, but if you wanted to upgrade that you'd need a new motherboard as well - in which case you may be better off buying a new PC, especially if you intend on doing a lot of gaming.

I guess I'll start saving now, because if I buy a PC now, i'd like it to be mid to high end. Otherwise I'd have to run the same drill after two years.
