It's a bit shocking that it's taken them this long to pin down the problem! Jeezus!

The whole article, that as AB said originated on Yahoo, is a bit misleading. What the speaker was referring to was that the majority of units out there that could suffer from RRoD have been either repaired or fixed before they hit a consumers hands. They found the issue quite a while ago, but there was so much stock already in the retial pipeline it was going to take a long time to fix enough units that it would actually impact consumer perception. They feel they are now past that point, but of course, you never know, but MS are probably in a pretty good position to know how many of what unit are in the pipeline.

Yes, but they can get the failure rate down to the typical failure rate for any piece of hardware (something like 1-3% I believe).

RROD has really been a nonissue for over a year now.

Exactly my thoughts. The 65nm GPU and new heatsinks have been put in over a year ago so I'm not sure why this is just making the news now.

Heh, warranty? Or did you do something to void the warranty? If that's the case then you really can't hate on MS.

I hope mine isnt going to go RROD on me. Are there any early signs? I havent had any graphical errors or sound errors, just the entire console completely freeze on me in some cases. Happened a few times in the last couple of months, mainly with Skate 2, so I am thinking its just a buggy game.

Bought mine last November, is an Elite HDMI one.

I'm glad they've sorted this out. Mine still hasn't RRoD'd on me, so I'm happy to know it won't happen again after that.

I cant tell if this is for future consoles or the ones fixed under warranty... i only wonder because I just sent my launch console in for repair and I had it back in 6 days...

Wow, turn-around time has really sped up. Is that 6 business days?

That's not true. 65nm CPU has been around for a while and so have the bigger heatsinks ( the stop gap that didn't cure RROD but reduced the chances of it happening). The 65nm GPU only made an appearance in 360s manufactured around October 2008.

Regardless, if MS ever released the numbers, I would love to see from Jan. 2008 to Oct. 2008 in comparison to before to see how their implemented heatsinks and 65nm cpu's worked. Even with just those numbers I bet they made a huge difference.

Yea... took about 2 days to get there from PA. They called my cell the same day to verify shipping address I had my xbox back in my hands the following Monday... so a total of 7 days for them to repair and ship back... 9 days total from my house and back. They still throw in the 1 month Live cards...

My XBOX is a few years old and always worked. Only time I received the RRs was when I attached an external cooling fan to the back. When I removed it, I got no more RRs.

The first one ( launch ) screwed itself up after frying its GPU after losing the 1 yr warranty , the second one fried its RAM module after just finishing its 1 yr warranty. the 3 yr extended warranty is only for 3 RROD not for 2 or 1 RROD :(

Hence , Microsoft is EVIL.

^ I'll partially agree. Their HDMI audio update bricked my machine, but they have sent the prepaid shipping container. Here is hoping for a speedy recovery. I'm missing my Halo time :(

wouldnt they just have to re-rolder on the chips (cpu/gpu/scaler etc), fit a better cooler or a better setup (x-clamp sort of thing) and hey presto?
