Neowin Givaway's or Contests

Recommended Posts

I would like to recommend that any contest that Neowin promotes be limited to members with at least 10 posts prior to the date of the contest.

No matter who wins or how, people will always find a reason to complain.

Let's say you've been playing the lottery for many years and someone plays for the first time and wins. What's the difference here?

Sure our chances decrease, but the contest is not for us, but it is more of a marketing thing to attract people to the site.

If you really want something for the members, we can hold our own. Like everyone donates $5 or less and we can 'give away' copies of software.

No, It is just a suggestion. That is what this section is for. I already have two Vista DVD's. I don't need another one. If I won I would have refused it, or donated it.

Well the rules of the giveaway were clearly stated in the OP, and it's just that; a giveaway. I don't really see what the problem is......

As usual we have something to give away to all our members worldwide, Windows Vista Ultimate (RED) Edition.

Vista (RED) is enhanced with (PRODUCT) RED wallpapers, gadgets, and a unique screen saver and DreamScene. For more information on Windows Vista and Vista (RED) please head to Microsoft's Website.

In order to enter the competition you simply have to reply to this thread, we will select a winner at random and multiple posts will not count so no need to go crazy folks.

The competition is now closed.

Yes they were and if you were not a member when the above post was made then you were not a member. It clearly states to all our members worldwide.

That's unfair to new members and old members (lurkers). It's up to the staff but I highly doubt they'd put this into effect in future giveaways or contests.

EDIT: ^ It doesn't say "to all our members worldwide, prior to this post". :/

*scratches hard*

Apart from your arse, where are you pulling those details from? If you had to be a member before the start of the competition that would have been well clarified.

Besides which, the winner was a member before the start date.

There is utterly no reason at all for this to be implemented...surely.

As for your technicality, for the duration of the competition, if someone signs up, they become eligible don't they? Isn't that...the point?? Ie, if you are a member at any stage you can enter, you are included in "all members worldwide".

people will just sign up for the contest and never come back if they dont win it.

Gary7 has a point. Should implement rules about giveaway and contest. Minimal posts and stuff, to be fair.

It's impossible to please everyone with the contests here, on any number of matters: eligibility and method of entry being the most contentious two. Your recommendation is duly noted.

A lurker is not a member.

I posted the quote, you can read can't you. Yes he was but that is not my point.

My point is that if someone signs up for the sole purpose of entering a contest, that it should not be permitted.

Thank You.

Neowin gets a boost out of people signing up for things like this, which like it or not will be one of their motives.

I commented on this in the topic, but to be perfectly honest who cares. It's just a competition.

I would still like to see some original competitions though, things that require some effort on the members behalf before they get prizes shipped off to them. I'm sure there will be more of them though.

Uggh after being linked this, i guess i have to comment on all this:

The idea someone just joins the forum to be in the contest is wrong.

the idea that someone joins the site, and then say stops coming, ends up winning, and may not get it anyway due to contact info being outdate.(if it was random by system, instead of the post in thread thing that this one was...which means i hope they never do this).

the idea of it being only open to active members, though would be a nice one, would alienate the ones who don't post to often., and would possiblly equal tons of spamming, though it could be based on relation to post/topic/word/join date counts....

The idea of behing in relation to your forum standing(your warnings could disqualify you!), could be bad....

The idea of being in relation to your join date: problems is, where the cutoff point would be, though it would be possible....and we could have tiered levels (how long you have been on site +6-7 years = best prizes, +5 years=better prizes,+4, +3,+2, +1 year=okay prizes, +6 months=meh, +1 month=hahahaha).

These have bound to be things that should be through heads of EVERY SITE THAT HAS A FORUM CONTEST/GIVEAWAY. It prevents the feeling that having been a loyal member to a site/forum from being cheated out by someone new, who may have joined with intention of just seeing if they can get the prize, and then never deal with the forum ever....let alone the opposite for new members who joined only to see people in upper years/posts win everytime(though could make them stay thinking they will get something for years of populating the forum).

*btw...i guess i qualify for "lurker" status, as i rarelly come to the forum anymore, i tend to hit neowin irc daily....so....eh....

I also had no intention of partaking in the giveaway, as all the companies that made the "RED" products seemed to raise prices of them to offset the amount of money i guess they gave to the foundation(s) /me points at DELL

Also i already have two vista ultimate disks 32 and 64 that Microsoft sent me last year for letting them monitor my computer useage, i plan on getting win7 for my next computer, and then installing vista on old machine to use as a media/backup thingy.

For something like a copy of Vista it's not worth it - no one wants to get you guys jumping through hoops for a prize with little relative value when compared with some of the other giveaways we've hosted.

I was involved in the administration of the Dragon competition here and the Neowin logo competition, both of which were judged contests based on creativity. For those, however, the prizes on offer were larger; as such we decided that the resultant fun was worth the significant effort required on the part of both the members and staff in organising and entering such a contest :)

why 10 post, how about just becoming a member before the contest, it should be open to anyone just joining or not

It was just a number, your method would work.
