[FIXED] GRUB troubles

Recommended Posts

I had Vista Home Premium installed (came with laptop - Acer Aspire 5100) with Linux Mint and I decided to remove Mint because I rarely used it and it was getting annoying since it would automatically start up if I didn't scroll down to boot into Vista/Longhorn from the boot screen.

So, I went into Vista Disk Management and deleted all the partitions with Mint on it. Made it into unallocated space and formatted it as a new Drive (:F). I rebooted and bang! The nightmare began...

GRUB Loading stage 1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 22

I can't use my recovery vista home premium DVD because the DVD drive on my laptop won't get recognized. (A problem I've had for many many months...)

So, I found this program Super Grub Disk and it has a USB drive option.

I downloaded the English .tar.gz and extracted the files onto my USB drive... but nothing happens.

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

So, at this point I'm stuck and I need to get rid of this GRUB error with only a USB flash drive to work with. If the only option is to get the DVD drive to work then I'll do it. If there is a way to fix with the USB drive, please help.

Thanks :D

UPDATE: Problem is fixed. fixmbr or fixboot didn't fix it. Vista Recovery disk has trouble with that...

So a complete new install of Vista removed the GRUB error.

Well, if you do not have a way to boot up your Vista CD / DVD, then you might have some issues.

You simply need to get to the recovery console and perform a FIXMBR. You could also try downloading FreeDos , burn it into a CD and use its fdisk.exe to replace Grub.

A good resource: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=144294

Jeez, that second link is some old Neowin!

If having to fix my DVD drive is the only option, I'll do it. However, if I can fix it with a USB flash drive it would be easier imo. The screw holding my DVD drive is worn-out (the cross on the screw is gone  ). So, I don't know how to open it up and fix it.

Yep, that's how I found out about Super Grub Disk, though I can't get the USB drive option to work with it.

I think that fixing your DVD drive will be your best option........ then you can employ the appropriate fixes.

Would buying this http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=351...facture=Samsung and using it as my DVD-drive work? I mean, if I put my Vista recovery disk in that and boot it up to fix the GRUB issue.

If I go to best buy to remove the stripped screw and replace the DVD drive, I am assuming it will end up costing 100+. So, I might as well get that external DVD drive for cheaper.

Or will I get some problem trying to boot from an external DVD drive for the Vista recovery disk?

I don't see why you would have any problems booting from the USB external drive if you configure it in the BIOS :)

Alright, going to order it now.

Thanks for the help, Barney and ViZioN.
