America's Army 3.0 to be distributed by Steam

Recommended Posts

It appears that the new game will be available on Steam. For those that are not aware of what Steam is, you can visit them HERE The chat on the official forum from [Dev]Acekilla really shows the benefits to the AA community from using Steam. He is responding in the quote to being asked if a stand alone download would also be available.:

Not to say that we wouldn’t at some point make a stand alone AA3 installer package, but the difference here is we no longer need a separate ‘installer’ that only has to be uncompressed after download and then move the files AGAIN. With Steam and the Deploy Client, it installs as is downloads.

Of course the additional features and support that comes with this is a HUGE step up from what we did in AA2. First of all, universal autoupdating for clients and servers is something that is really going to help us in responding more quickly to the needs of the game. We can update the game many times in between bigger releases.

We also no longer have to schedule extra time to build patches and installers, test them, upload them to download partners, wait for everyone to have it before release, etc. When the build is good to go, we upload it to Steam/Deploy Repository and the updates is LIVE and out.

Not to mention the Steam features that come with this are pretty rad, such as the Steam Overlay system that works in AA3 (pressing Shift-Tab brings up in-game interface for instant messaging with friends, web browsing, etc.).

We’re really excited about our new distribution system.

This is GREAT news. Means it will be a lot easier to get the game + a MUCH wider audience (so more people to own :p). I really cannot wait till the release now :D

That is freakin' perfect (Y)

At least they aren't using their own awful distribution client like they just started using. The thing is slow, unstable and after a number of crashes it deletes the cache of what has been downloaded and you need to download it again.

Yeah I never touched the deploy client. Although it's a good idea, it's just not practical. So glad they've listened to the community and are going to release it on steam. Also means they can do 'mini-patches' too, which is perfect for a game like this.

looks better though i still reckon they should add Aliasing to the game it looks terrible without it and it also makes it harder to spot distant enemies. same grudge i hold with ArmA is lack of decent aa just ruins the games stince hard to shoot at or even aim when there's 5 jagged pixels moving round and guns aren't accurate.

YAY, I wonder if my sniper account is still active from 2 years ago...

STEAM is WIN, no matter what negative things people can dig up. I LOVE being able to reinstall windows, drop files over, and reinstall steam and BAM, all games working, no bs.

I'm sure that AA will be supported in 3.0. Though of course nothing is guaranteed.

Indeed. The only people who have a real reason to complain about Steam nowadays are those who want to acquire games distributed via Steam by not so legal means.

I actually admit, that I buy more games now due to Steam - I used to download everything.

You can force it through drivers.

My only problem with America's Army is that I always have too many FF kills or deaths.

Yeah I used to occasionally download games years ago but ever since I have started using steam I legally buy every singl game I have. Steam is awesome, I've bought 20+ games off of it.

Ahh the good old days :)

Maybe we should get a group of people together ready to make a clan for 3.0. Play some matches in TWL until tournament is added to the game. I used to play competitively and loved it, even got web cast a couple of times which was awesome. I'm sure I've got the video around here somewhere XD

Same here. I even got Bioshock for $5! The only downside of Steam is that you need to have an internet connection unlike discs and assume that Steam will always be there even after 10-15 years.
