[Official] Need for Speed - SHIFT

Recommended Posts

NFS:Shift is continuing to surprise me...I'm still having tons of fun playing this game. I just unlocked Tier 3 cars, and they are a bloody handful to drive.

If you are a racing game fan, and haven't played this yet, your missing out big time.

I'd say the Shift cockpit is almost as good as the one in GT5:P...yes its that good lol

Just visual damage? I thought the damage affects the car perf.

Will it run smoothly on 2GHz dual core, 2GB ram, 8600gs mobile?

Wen i go to get laptop i might get it. :D

Theres a setting for visual damage or damage that effects performance.

I have heard reports of it running like crap on an 8600m.

If you go into the options you can change damage from "visual" to full, it is supposed to affect turning and speed when damaged but it doesn't seem to do too much.

yeah it doesn't do too much, but it does affect it. The game is really hard (well i'm playing on the hardest difficulty and manual transmission). But it's an amazing game. I am having a lot of fun with it. Best need for speed i have played since underground.

It's also kinda sad because this is what pro street should have been. As soon as you get to the higher tiers are the car are really hard to handle. My supped up M3 was damn near impossible to handle until i got used to it's power. I haven't even gotten to the super cars yet...

The track cutting penalty is quite annoying for me that drive badly, I'm often out of the track and now, not only I loose precious time, but I may get disqualified :/

@solardog, anything more "old"?

Seriously, having "realistic" cockpit view and damage is old now? I tough it was the new trend...

PGR3 had cockpit view and that released in 2005. PGR2 had damage too and that came out in 2003. I'm sure there is more examples but yeah, it's old news :p

If you guys are having trouble with the drifting events...the solution for me is using stock powered cars with full suspension/footwork upgrades.

e46 M3 with stage 3 suspension, brakes, tires, on stock engine with NOS stage 3 is the way to go :D

Been playing this for a day now and IMO this is ProStreet on real tracks. this is Simcade all the way. The thing that kills this game for me is it seems they were trying for a more sim-like handling, but the rest of the game is pure arcade in the way you score points for every little aspect like trading paint and spinning out other cars etc. IMO they have made a huge mistake here, they should have gone pure arcade and kept it pure NFS. Racing games are my favorite genre and Ive played most of them, I'll just say that this doesn't even rank in the top 10 for me. I'm going to keep playing, but this is definitely one of those schitzo games that doesn't know what the hell it is...it feels old to me and visually its pretty disappointing... the cockpit is decent but nothing special at all. This is Simcade at its finest which is racing at its worst..IMO. :boo:

I'm with you. I love arcade racing games and I love sim racing games, but this is neither and frankly, isn't very good. I have nothing against the visuals, I think they're pretty nice looking. The gameplay itself though just is a huge disapointment.

but think about it... arcade-style rewards for realistic skills, it really rewards players who get better at the game... having simmy handling means alot more opportunities for 'i bet you cant do this' moments

The handling's not like a sim though. At times it fools you into thinking it is, and then you'll do one of the many things to make you realize that it falls very short in that department. If they made it more arcadey or more of a sim, they could have had a great game, but there's simply too much to hate about this game.

I actually quite like the reward system. I think it's the only part of the game that truly works well.

Shift has been a pretty big disappointment for me. I had my hopes up since the old Blimey guys were involved.

I was expecting a sim but this is just an arcade racer with a need to brake once in a while. It's as if this is the baby from a one night stand between GTR2 and CMR:DIRT.

If this is a sim then what is it simulating? The atmosphere of a race track is just completely missing. No race weekends, no pits, silly signs and activities on the sides of the tracks... The inertia is almost completely lacking on the cars. You do feel the cars sliding but powersliding a gt50 is easier then driving a bicycle. This is probably because the game was mainly designed for game controllers.

Sound is ok for a consolegame but very flat to my taste. You have your engine sounds and you breaks squeeling but thats about it. The engine sounds are missing life and are not deep enough.

I tried going back to the game a couple of times but it was just frustrating. Felt like i was sitting in a game hall flipping coins in the machine to be dropped on a random grid for a 2 lap race.

I'll be waiting for rfactor 2 or something like that before i hook up my g25 again.

I also like the reward system, it kind of unique...something to expand upon. The handling is just odd...its doesn't feel real world, but its not a fun kind of arcade handling either...its annoying more than anything..

Thats part of it too. This is one of the worst representations of real world tracks ever. It feels like ProStreet on real tracks and just feels wrong.

Noticing something weird, I don't exactly know how to describe it, but its kind of a "time warping effect". The only other game Ive experienced this in is GRID, but not to this extent. Its different than poor performing hardware or drivers. Am I ringing any bells?

All I know are the Drifting events need to rot in hell where they belong. I cannot even come close to getting past the first one. Granted I only tried three times before I got completely fed up, but man is it annoyingly difficult.

So have a few questions which I will put in Bold.

So pretty much starting to get to the point it is now getting hard. I have opened up Tier 3, am a Level 12 I believe, and now not consistently getting first place. I really am just focusing on the races right now, did one of those car duels and it took me two attempts but I did beat it, but I really do just like the races with other cars and not much else. Can I go through the game and get to the world tour just doing the races, or am I going to have to do the events I do not like as well?

And did an Invitational Tier 4, I think it was with the Bugatti?? or something like that (I am not a car guy at all drive a 2000 Chrysler Concorde in the real world) and holy hell was I all over the place. Even with barely being able to see I somehow managed to get first place by 10 seconds ahead of the pack, I eventually kind of got used to the handling and it was one super long lap (7:30 time for one lap), so kind of looking forward to getting up to those sick fast cars, but also not all that excited based on how all over the place I was.

So what is a good Tier 2 car? I got the ummmm Lancer Evolution I think? I also def have the Camaro SS as well cause I wanted to enter the Tier 2 USA events. For both of them I upgraded the tires and the first thing under upgrade as they both had the most impact on the bars, but I am feeling like neither are strong enough to keep up with other Tier 2 cars, or is it just I am not that good and they should both be fine?

On the IGN forums, we found out that tier 2 suspension seems to be broken. We noticed that we started losing races with upgraded tier 2 cars, and wondered why.

We can replicate the effect using tier 3 suspension and tuning.

http://boards.ign.com/need_for_speed/b6063/185170798/p1

"I can produce the exact same handling qualities as I was getting with the suspension 2 setting by loosening the springs/dampers and decreasing the bump-stops on the suspension 3 package. On the suspension 2 package, you were unable to play with the bump-stop settings....and apparently the default setting for them was so screwed up that no matter what else you did to the suspension, you just kept hitting the bump stops (hitting the bump stops would cause exactly the behavior I was getting from the car...bouncing over even the slightest suspension activity)"

So in my opinion, stay away from tier 2 suspension.

I'm on tier 3 nearing 4 and havent one on drift event.

For tier 2 I really liked my 350z (think it was tier 2 anyway, can hardly remember I blew through the first two pretty fast.)

Meh, just checked the release date for Australia....24th Sep, not too far away but what sucks is by the time we get it and you wanna play online it's full of people who already clocked the game (and had plenty of time to learn the ins and outs) and it just destroys the experience for me, is one of the reasons I don't play online.

Yay! My copy arrived today! :) Thank god for ShopTo, as GAME were being a bunch of gits about my order with them. I used the voucher code exploit to try and save some money, but they rejected the order yesterday, so I tried it again, rejected again, so I tried it again, but without the voucher code, so paying full price, and they still rejected it! I'm glad I turned to ShopTo, as they were selling it for ?34.85, which is cheaper even after the GAME voucher code!:pp
