NFS Shift: Driver Profile

NFS@E3: Inside the SHIFT Driver Profile

Earlier on Monday, EA SVP and Professional Race Driver Patrick Soderlund took to the E3 stage to present the latest Need for Speed SHIFT video; this one focussing on what we're calling the Driver Profile. After watching the video we spoke with Jesse Abney to dig into a little more depth about the newly-revealed game mechanics for Need for Speed SHIFT.

Tell us more about the Driver Profile system?

's all about who you are behind the wheel? The evolution as a race driver from event to event that reflects who you are on the track. Will you be feared or respected? This persona is shaped by tactics used in the race, be it aggressive driving or precise driving, presenting degrees of who you are, playing this personality up throughout the interface and game presentation.

How do this relate to scoring?

Every action on the track to gain course position is shaped by key gameplay moments against Online and AI racers. Profile Actions add up to Driver Profile points, Star rewards gained for podium finishes are tied to performance unlocks and a Driver Level systemic all rolls up into the Driver Profile.

What is the Driver Level?

Driver Level is the trigger for all vehicle and customization unlocks throughout the career. This progression triggers Discipline Challenges specific to skill-related events. The connection great games build through a character’s growth over a career is something we wanted to express in NFS. Tying this into our system for performance customization gives the player another set of goals to reach for.

Does points affect the Online experience?

Driver Profile points can be earned playing in Online, Career or in a Quick Race. They will always earn points and become a better driver regardless of where they are racing, even playing the demo released later in Summer.

What other elements are tracked in the Driver Profile?

Driver telemetry is a statistical and visual analysis of the driver’s achievements: cars passed, corners mastered, every cleanly-driven section is shown on the 'In The Zone' meter during every event. Race Badges are earned for reaching milestones, cash rewards, and all career unlocks available.

What are badges?

Badges are in-game rewards for completing set driver objectives within each race. The collection of badges provide immediate recognition of a racers accomplishments during Online competition. They are also added to the player’s Sticker Gallery and available in Visual Customization.

How many badges can be earned?

There are over 200 racing milestones to be earned. A certain number are attainable during Career; more for Quick Races and rounded out by competing Online. There are trophies and achievements based on how many badges the player earns. Many simulation games become a grind. SHIFT’s multiple reward systems are meant to keep players in each regardless of their position. Learning how-to drive, getting practice in the track, progressing their Profile points, and earning rewards that keep the fun factor high.

The in-car camera look incredible!

Can't wait to play this, hoping that they don't screw up (Carbon, Pro Streets and Undercover was always looking incredible in videos until they got released...)

E3 2009: Need for Speed Shift Update

June 3, 2009 - I've played Need for Speed Shift a couple times already, though in previous demos I was only able to drive a handful of cars on a couple different tracks. That was great and the core driving is the most important part of the game, obviously, but we didn't know anything about the career mode. Until this year's E3, that is.

Need for Speed Shift's career mode is set up in a multiple-path-esque manner. During every race, online or off, you'll earn driver points that work toward increasing your level. Points are broken up into two types, Precision and Aggression. You'll get Precision points for making clean passes and mastering corners, while you'll get Aggression points for things like hitting a car as you pass it. The total points work toward your overall level, but the two categories earn you different cars, upgrades and so forth. So if you net a lot of Precision points, you might get some handling packages available for purchasing, while Aggression might earn you something that befits a more violent driver.

The career break-down seems like a really cool setup.

You'll also be earning Stars and Badges as you race. Badges are very similar to Achievements as you earn each one for doing very specific tasks. Stars, on the other hand, are awarded for both your finishing place and if you can surpass certain point thresholds in an event. Both of these work to earn you other unlockables than you earn with the driver points.

The end result is that no matter how well you're doing in a race or the game overall, you'll be earning something. One reason for coming up with this layout was that the studio didn't want people to drop out online as soon as they knew that they couldn't win. In this scenario, you'll still be racking up new items even if you don't finish first, so it's well worth your time to make sure you finish every event you start and bank the points you net.

The game just keeps getting better every time we see it.

While the career stuff was the greater focus of the demo, I did notice that the game felt a good bit better than the last time I had raced it. While the experience has been stellar every time out thanks to the awesome dashboard camera work, the steering was a little touchy previously. That seems to have been entirely fixed and the bit that I played drove very, very well.

I'm really excited to get my hands on Need for Speed Shift in full form. The game is already adrenaline-packed, and it just keeps on getting better every time I've seen it.

edit:

i hate the 8car grid in nfs-S . :/

they say its sim & still give just a lame 8 car grid limit.

NFS Porsche had that 8 car grid limit waaaaay back in year 2000.

reflections on some cars are really crappy, reminds me of NFS U2 :p

so far, no info on pit-stops. i really hope EA atleast includes that.

damage model from those vids is no where near GRID's :/

only +point so far is, cockpit view is awesome :D

  • 2 weeks later...

One thing is for sure, I'll never buy a NFS game again without trying the Demo. I still "facepalm" seeing that Pro Streets Box on my dvd shelf.

Need For Speed: Shift Career mode takes 70hrs to complete. :o

Link (thanks to san.W10) :D

I'm sure you can finish the core in less amount of time. It's probably 70 hours to get every little thing unlocked I imagine and I hope.

They say it's more realistic than previous NFS games but so far nothing has indicated that it actually is...Don't hold your breath for pit-stops and stuff like that.

LOL. Pwned. I skipped the last 2 NFS games totally. Didn't bother touching Pro Street or Undercover. Had installed the ProStreet demo and played a atmost 4-5 races.

If Shift is more like Grid, I may get it.

Is there a game in which your the cops chasing the criminals BTW?

No police in Shift. Its a circuit race with simulation like feel.
