Wireless Network Adapter - Good?

Recommended Posts

Is this dongle any good?

I have never had a wireless connection before in my life so don't know a lot about it. We're moving house and the new landlord will not allow wires trailing through the house. The distance between the BT HomeHub and the 360 would be about 7 metres as the crow flies and would have to go through around 5 walls.

Will the network adapter be able to do this without my suffering a loss of connection quality?

Thanks,

Richard.

It's not that good really since it's not Wireless-N or anything. I have a 5 bedroom house, and I get 2/5 bars on my Xbox 360. It goes through about 4 thin walls.

Looks like I'm screwed then...

This is what you want. It is a bit of a pain to setup but it works way better than wireless. Just download the installation utility for the 200 version and update the firmware and set the passcodes this way instead of by the instructions they give.

I have been using the wireless adapter for around 3 years with no problems whatsoever under similar circumstances to yours...

However I do believe there are some better suggestions in this thread with the routers and what not.

Just posting to say that it is by far not as bad as people would have you believe (Y)

?59.99 is a bit much for a rubbishy 54G adapter though don't you agree?

You can get an 85mbps homeplug starter set for less.

Your best bet is to get a Router that has firmware that allows you to put it into bridge mode, that way you get 4 Ethernet ports in case you ever want to set up a computer or other networked device in that room. You also get more utility out of the device because if for some reason you don't need it anymore you can give it to a friend or sell it as a router or bridge, when you don't need the 360 WiFi adapter anymore its just garbage.

I dont think he has an 85mbps internet connection, let alone a 54mbs connection. Even if hes NOT using it for xbox live, and just for media sharing 54mbs would be suffice.

I have a 512kbps broadband connection at the moment, perhaps when I move it will increase, but barely.

So I will be using the connection for xbox live as well as media sharing.

I am still drunk and feel very sick goodbye..

So you'd pay more for a slower, less reliable connection?

You wouldn't have to worry about signal or anything. Because it's wired in.

All I was saying is that if that was his only option then it will work fine.

So for Home Plugs, how do these look:

Amazon

or these?

eBay

Certainly wouldn't want to pay anymore than ?50.

Thanks for the advice guys, I never even knew these things existed!

Richard.

Is there no security issue with running your internet connection over the electrical wiring? I really have no idea, just wanting to be sure.
