DirtyLarry Veteran Posted March 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2009 Okay, this could be a really long thread, but I will try and just keep it to the facts... I tried to get Windows Media Center in Vista ultimate 64 working on my 360. After a lot of issues with codecs, etc., I finally got Media Center on the PC's end to play all video, but of course the video still would not play on the 360. I then remembered I needed Transcode 360. So I go to the official Transcode 360 site, and you cannot even download it from their site anymore. All links are broken, so I found a post on some xbox related site and downloaded it through there. Version 4.6 for Vista I believe it is. I installed Transcode 360, restarted my comp, and right at Startup got an error message about "Transcode 360 tray.exe could not launch program will now quit," or something along those lines. basically it was trying to launch itself and it could not, so it would crash Now even though Transcode is nowhere in any processes' or anywhere else in the task manager or Windows Defender for that matter, when I go to uninstall it I am being told I have to stop the current version of Transcode.exe from running in order to uninstall. Again, thing is, it is not running. Nowhere. I then used msconfig to disable it in the Startup Items. That helped not get the error message about Transcode not launching on Startup, but the uninstaller still claims it is running. I booted into Safe Mode, uninstaller still thinks it is running even in Safe Mode!!! Now here is the deal, it seems other have had this issue about the uninstaller not working thinking Transcode is running when it is not, and the few threads I did find all the people were told that you can and have to uninstall Transcode manually, and ironically enough all of them pointed to a thread on the Transcode forums that is now gone, nowhere to be found. Funny thing is people responded saying thanks, uninstalling it manually worked, but I cannot find out how to uninstall it manually anywhere. I tried Google Cache as well, no luck. FYI, I am using WMP11 to stream, which I should have just done to begin with but being out of the PC scene for so long did not even realize it did it until I had these issues and did Google things. So I do not need Transcode at all, and really just want it off my computer, even if it is not really running which apparently it is not at all, but it is just one of those little things that will annoy me to no end until it is fixed. So I was wondering if there was any chance anywhere here happened to save the manual instructions for uninstalling Transcode. I should have known not to use a program that the links of the official website are all broken, lesson learned. I read there also were some apps made just to uninstall stubborn apps, but really do not know if I want to get that crazy with things.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted March 7, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted March 7, 2009 (edited) Are the exe files still on your hard drive somewhere? Only thing I can think of is if they are, booting into DOS with a USB stick or something and manually deleting them? Also have you tried any safe registry cleaners like the one that comes with CCleaner? It should pickup bad paths and some of the other junk left behind. Lastly, use a better media server :p Try http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ , It actually has some 360 support now [ignore the name]. Although with a PS3 Larry you should use it if you can, the media support is much better which you will benefit from due to having a 5.1 system - You won't get DTS or 5.1 working on your 360. [Although I do realize you're using Media Center on the PC] edit: Apparently installing this version - http://www.transcode360.be/Transcode360Vista1.6.3.zip - Then uninstalling it again might do the trick. From looking on google it seems this is one messy application (N) edit2: I've also read this installs a service into Windows, try going to run, services.msc, then seeing if any of the running relates to Transcode 360. Thanks AB. I already tried your first edit, but with a different version I think, so I am going to try that version and see if it works. And I also did try that with services as well, went through the entire list, and as I said also into Safe Mode where the list was only four apps, so made it easy. No luck with either. It is like the phantom application that says it is running but is not. Just one of those things that is so annoying. I am going to try installing that one version though, as I also read that helped. I also did not get into anything with the registry, so I will also try that... So you say use this ps3media server app huh? I am open to anything that works, believe it or not TVersity also gave me issues, would not launch either and crashed on startup, something about a window not being able to launch or something, so I already uninstalled that. So let me try some of those things above, and past back. Definitely thanks. It is one of those things that is just annoying. (Y)
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted March 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted March 7, 2009 I had this exact same problem over a year ago. I regularly format though so I never touched the POS again. Terrible software. Wish I could give you some advice Larry, but I could never remove it no matter what processes I stopped or any attempts to lock it down on start up. Terrible software.Wish I could give you some advice Larry, but I could never remove it no matter what processes I stopped or any attempts to lock it down on start up. Yeah I have to say, I really tried before posting here doing absolutely everything I could. I really came here hoping that by some strange reason perhaps someone had copy and pasted the manual uninstall intructions that once existed on the Transcode forums itself. AB has a few good suggestions though so I still need to try them, but I am not holding my breath. What really sucks is my friend who is also my coworker tried getting WMP 11 to work on his system because I told him it worked on mine, which led him to also trying to get media center to work, which also led to him installing Transcode and getting the SAME EXACT issue. he did a system restore which I may or may not try. I have always been really skeptical of doing them. What really gets me is they should either take their site down or at least make a mention of the fact it is a POS on Vista. They obviously do not support it anymore simply from the fact there are no links on the site and their forums were taken down, so just do the right thing and either pull the whole site or put a message on your site saying do not use it for Vista. Thing is I used and loved this app for XP, and I know it is a done by just some guys and I usually do not slam software made by people for people, but to me it just is about doing the right thing and posting on the site do not use it. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted March 8, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted March 8, 2009 Just wanted to provide a fairly quick update... The whole transcode360 running but not running was bothering me to no end. So since my coworker did it with no issues, I also decided to do a System Restore. The restore took me back before I tried getting anything at all up and running, so I installed the ffdshow codecs, and went right to installing PS3 Media Server just as AB suggested.... WHAT A GREAT APP!!! It worked virtually right away, and I am SO SO happy with how well it performs and the files it can actually stream. I mean it can also stream .mkv files no problem at all!!! And do 5.1 sound on the PS3!!!! I HAVE FOUND THE ONE AND ONLY STREAMING APP I WILL EVER NEED!!! Sorry for the all caps, but I am SO, SO happy not only did it work that easy, but it is by far the best app I have seen for support as well.... So AB, hopefully you read this, and I am just going to send you a PM with some questions in the next day or two about getting some of the "more advanced" stuff working on PS3 Media Server, specifically AVSynth and some of the more advanced Audio settings. Since it provides the option, and I have a 5.1 receiver, I figure the Audio might as well be as good as possible too... So thanks AB for that heads up, only App I am going to recommend myself for sure.

Well I always just used my Mac, so to be honest I never really read any of those threads in detail you know? I used Connect360 and MediaShare for the Mac and was always happy with them, but now since I have a PC again and it is way more powerful than my mac, figured I can use that. :p
