Steam Update

Recommended Posts

Out today, it claims to have fixed the error where games would get stuck on Download Starting.. and it also claimed that it has fixed slow downloads with retail games e.g Unreal Tournament 3.

Anyone can confirm this? :D

I can confirm that it fixes the stuck on Download Starting, it happened on my Source dedicated server and Source SDK.

It hasn't fixed the "Download Starting" glitch for me. :( Unreal Tournament III is still stuck on the download. It just says "Downloading: 38%".

Sadly it is. Mine is at 41% at the moment, and I've had it going since most of yesterday. :(

1.3 days left, according to Steam. If I can keep the download going by continuously launching it, I might get it done by tonight with a bit of luck.

if you double click the game and try and run it,it will force the download, it might kick you off a few times but if that happens just go and run it again, its how i got the game, before i was stuck on the 'download starting' text then when i went to run the game it downloaded at over 1.2mb/sec

That's what I've been doing, and it either doesn't get through because Steam's overloaded, or the download is very slow, then it cuts off a minute after because Steam's overloaded.

also make sure your download location is set to UK and Ireland, not some slow ass French village somewhere

My location is set to UK, it was set to UK automatically. Also double clicking the game doesn't help, it just keeps throwing up the following:

I think it's referring to another bug. I had it a while ago where half of my games, even though they were fully downloaded all said 'download starting'. It didn't really affect anything as I could still launch the game, but it just looked queer. As said by SinghKing.

Glad it's fixed :)

That odd "Download Started" thing that Ryster mentioned in his post happened to me yesterday. I bought Dawn of War II and I had my download start, stop, and "Start" again for no apparent reason. The download speed was also horribly slow, but I imagine that may just be a consequence of the servers being hammered. I'll try again this morning.

EDIT: I just read the UT3 Titan Pack thread, and apparently the slow download speeds are a problem for a lot of people. That makes me feel a little comforted.

steam has been epic fail in the past few months. every time they release an update it either doesn't work or breaks something else.

That is what I have been saying, the last couple months, boooo!

Yeah, and it's unfortunate, since Steam has become my only way of purchasing PC games. Nowadays, it seems like a lot of big box type places (Future Shop, etc) suck for PC games. I searched two different stores yesterday for DoW2 and I couldn't find it. Hopefully the Steam guys realize that a lot of people don't have a decent alternative to turn to when it comes to buying their PC games, and maybe that'll motivate them to get these strange bugs worked out.
