42" Monitor, Low Resolution

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have recently purchased a brand new Samsung 42" Plasma which i want to use as a PC monitor among other things, sadly though the maximum resolution of the Samsung is 1024*768.

I am much more used to using 1280*1024 or 768.

I know i am limited by the hardware to this, and i have tried changing the font size to reduce window size, and even have to keep zooming out on firefox to see the full web pages etc.

Is there any software out there that can offer a work around to this, to make my desktop look as if it is running at 1280*768? Not sure exactly what im asking for or if its even possible, but surely there must be a way to make Windows XP smaller?

TIA

I believe what you want is to lower the DPI?

Edit: if i remmeber correctly you should be able to go below 96 dpi (the default) in xp but i dont think you can in vista

What kind of connection do you use ?

Vista and Win7 work fine at any resolutions with default video drivers assuming you use VGA,not sure about HDMI and component. But it should work the same.

If you use nVidia card create a Custom resolution.

I have 2 HDTV's,one 1080p,one at 720p max.For 1080i I had to create a custom resolution with nvidia drivers installed (1360x768).I have other friends using a big screen as PC output as well (on XP too),never heard of 1024x768 limitation.Recommended sizes 1280x720,1360x768 or 1920x1080.

Any Plasma screens I've seen can't do a resolution higher than 1024x768. They don't do anything higher than 720p.

LCD's however - can go all the way to 1920x1080, depending on the panel.

How can i work around that, i want to re-arrange XP so that it looks like its running at 1280 for example, but not loose the quality of txt or images

that is not correct. The Samsung plasma we have here at work has a native resolution of 1360x768. And that goes for just about every single 720p Samsung...LCD or Plasma.

Try 1360x768. That will at least give you a widescreen res. But other than that, no it can't go higher.

Yeah you are right. I have a 720p Samsung LCD and it natives at 1360x768 as well.

stop looking at poor quality plama's then, panasonic make native 1080p ones as do pioneer although pio are stoping production of tvs

yeah i know people that have 60in plasma that is only 720p as well.

Plasmas are capable of 1080p.

95% of Plasmas must be poor quality then. Because I work in a store with probably the biggest range of TV's and none of our Plasmas do 1080p.

Sprinkle fairy dust on it.

In all honestly, it's a large monitor with a very low (<40) DPI, you won't be able to get high quality graphics out of it. If you want good quality at that size you'd have to bump up the resolution a lot.

Remind me never to come to your store for a tv.

Lol, indeed. Many plasmas do 1080p these days. Anything 50" and above is almost guaranteed unless it's a budget set.

Well our store specialises in expensive equipment. I'll feed it back to head office that we don't have any 1080p Plasmas though, if many of them actually do support 1080p.
