Won't Boot Vista without DVD in drive

Recommended Posts

I have a couple year old computer that has a hodge-podge of drives. Formerly, my boot drive was XP-Pro on a SCSI Drive. I have three IDE drives, a DVD and two SATA Drives.

I installed Vista to a fresh new SATA Drive, It went through all the installation, updates, etc. Rebooted a couple of times.

When I took the DVD out, and rebooted, I get an error that says:

"No Boot Disk Present..."

I have turned off the SCSI drive in the BIOS Boot manager. The Bios boot order is DVD, then Hard Drive.

I read somewhere on the net about an error in the Vista install that might put some of the hidden boot files on one of the IDE drives. Sounds like I should have unplugged all the other drives except the DVD and the SATA drive that I wanted Vista on before the install.

The question is, What do I do now to get this Vista install working? Or Should I start over?

Thanks,

Kirk

sounds about right, i'd reinstall, it can be a bit tricky trying to move boot files.

Well, Looks like I posted this in the wrong forum at 3am last night. :-) Sorry! Guess I will just run with this thread here. Does customizing include getting it to run normally?

Go to http://www.vnunet.com/articles/download/2161500 and get it. Once it's installed you'll see the options for fixing your issue.

Downloaded and installed that. When I open the program, I get a message that says:

VistaBootPro has detected that Vista is either not installed or is installed on a hidden drive. You may experience minor problems using VistaBootPro and/or making changes to your BCD Registry.

Well, Vista is obviously installed because I am running this from Vista.

I backed up the current BCD and then tried to figure out how to fix the problem. Nothing was obvious, I went to System Bootloader and selected "Windows Vista Bootloader" and installed it on my C: drive.

That didn't solve the problem. When I click the "Online Support" button, I get a 404.

Was VistaBootPro a free program that is now paid? This version 3.2 I downloaded from your link. I Googled it and their website has version 3.3 for $9.95

Thanks,

Kirk
