PSN Signatures

Is Neowin going to be that anal about 12k? 20 Signatures in the same page account for an extra 240kb. Personally, I don't find that abusive, unless one uses a 56k connection...

Problem is you start making exceptions for one "group" on the forum then where does it end. Every group of MS/Apple/Nintendo members etc will want "leniency". There is nothing special about any of the groups so everyone is treated the same, and the only solution is either increase the restrictions or keep them as they are.

We all know the higher ups on NW don't feel their is good enough reason to increase the sizes and its impossible to keep everyone happy.

I wanted to use a pretty nice X360 gamercard in the past which was 60KB in size, there's nothing I could do but use something else.

I found this out ages ago.

I mean the rules are there for a reason, a few KB may not sound like much but if you group that with the many others on that page then it mounts up. There are still 56k users.

If Sony don't release a compact version it would be pretty harsh to kill all the PSN signatures in the GH, it's not like someone wants a random signature over 50kb, it's a functional signature for the PS3 gamers.

However rules are rules so if they are canned so be it. Just need to hope Sony release a more compact version if that is the case, or playfire sigs start working better.

Can't you just put a link to your stats in your sig? I personally don't see the need to keep everyone apprised of you scores or whatever they show.

Sort of an ePenis+ thing, like the Xbox360 signatures. I eventually removed mine because theres no need to keep everyone up to date on what I play.

Hahahaha they all got axed.

Someone has to call Sony Customer Services line and tell them Neowin doesn't allow signatures over 50k.

personally i think they should change the rules for sig sizes that are not hosted on the neowin server, seems like a fair compromise tbh and like people said it's only 12kb extra infact im sure neowin has the lowest size out of all the forums i use

Hosting a signature on the Neowin server is not permitted as it is misuse of our server resources.

The restrictions have never been about saving bandwidth, they're about not annoying the viewer base with giant images.

If you have something larger than the limit: link to it. Anybody that actually cares will follow the link and see it.

Using yours as an example, it's 40% over the limit.

Other popular forums (blizzards world of warcraft forums, slashdot, centre for inquiry) don't allow images in signatures at all. It doesn't matter what other forums do.

Because your sig breaks the rules?

71.65 KB seems a little higher for a signature.

IF and it's a big IF there is another category added, such as less than < 80kb for externally hosted sigs, couldn't the devs hack in a new option to the control panel?

Such as

Disable All Sigs

Show Sigs <= 50kb

Show all Sigs

?

Just a suggestion, no idea how practical it is, but I'd of thought any mobile/dialup users would probably just disable sigs altogether to save on the loading.

I don't want to give anyone false hope and I will make no promises but this idea is being considered.

Does that go for all sigs or just the PSN ones?

You can already Disable signatures, but no option for over 50KB etc etc.. but re-read what Fred said, it's being considered and he makes no promises

Control Panel > Board Settings

I know you can currently disable signatures, what I was saying was add further customization than just enabled/disabled if they do go ahead with a higher size limit.

Plus I also know he said it's only being considered, to aid consideration those were my suggestions :p

The same could be said about your personal Mac collection. Do I need to know you have 3 cinema displays?

We wouldn't do something for Sony users to the exclusion of Xbox users or vice versa.

That would add additional strain to the servers since they would have to compare each signature against a preset limit. If members find that Neowin is slow with signatures enabled then they are free to disable them. Anyone who wants to view an individual signature could click on the member's profile (for example, if someone's signature is being discussed and you want to see what the fuss is all about).

Other than those two points, everyone reading this thread should re-familiarize themselves with our Avatar and Signature Guidelines:
