Software Engineering Salaries

Question

So I came across this article on Yahoo about the best paying fields that a common graduate can professionalize in, and what the expected salaries are:

http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-t..._figure_job-518

I find it hard to believe Software Engineers starting range can reach $90k, hell even $70k for that matter.

I know senior level developers can make this kind of dough, but anyone with less than 2 years?

A friend of mine is currently working for Microsoft... Not sure that he makes that much a year or not. I would like to work there but it's hard to get in.

I tried to get a job for one of the companies with AutoCAD (that i was in the training for) but no luck.. so I ended up doing the web development/programming for now. Even though I am learning new stuff with AutoCAD book as spare time until I get a job for that position. I heard that new AutoCAD 2009 has new UI and stuff... which make it more easier.

Good luck to those of you if you plan to get a job for one of the big companies such as Microsoft.

wow, i go to school for a degree in 'computer science' and i learn programming. We also have an average of 45k for this type of field so I don't know if those figure reflect students coming out of MIT or something but it doesn't seem that realistic to me. I make 90k a year just alone from my rental properties, oddly the world just doesn't seem balanced anymore haha

Anything above $60,000 a year requires you to have at least two years of experience under a belt if you're an undergraduate right now. When you're in your junior year, you should already have an internship position or pursuing one. No employer is willing to give such a salary to an undergraduate unless he or she has the experience. A 4.0 GPA and charity work won't even warrant it.

I am a Visual Basic Developer and the majority of the work that I have done has been for internal business apps on a Windows platform, I have also done, and am currently working on a web based project. I do not have a college degree, however I do have over 20 years IT experience (this is starting to sound like a resume)

I moved from San Francisco at the end of 98. I was making nearly 60K. (as employee)

While in Seattle (2000 - 2001) I made $35 to $50 hr (contract)

I now live in NYC and my salary has been between $75K and $90K (salary) and $40 to $50 hr (contract)

Hope that helps give you an idea of what is being paid our here. The range can vary quite a bit based on the types of projects, background, experience, language(s), and communication abilities. (MAN have I had to deal with people with LOW human communication skills!!!)

Best of luck.

I'm a Computer Science major with and emphasis in Computer Information Systems which from my understanding is more towards the business end of computer science since I have a second major in Business Administration, which is 5 extra business courses. My school list my major as 40K+ after graduation and has Software Engineering as 40-65K starting.

I have a friend who graduated 2 or 3 semesters ago as a Software Engineer and I think he's making just under $30 per hour, but he's also a Graduate student and I think the company he's working for is also paying some of his tuition. I'm guessing he works an average of 20 hours per week over the whole year because of summer break and winter break. That would put him around 30K plus tuition.

As far as 90K out of school I'd find it hard to believe but could be possible depending on who you are working for and past experience including internships and such.
