oceanmotion
Remember back in the day of Xbox 1 when you had to have a credit card to use Xbox Live. Well, I cancelled my account at the end of the first Xbox's life to take a break from gaming and it was apparently the only option at the time to stop being charged since it was tied to the credit card only system and I wasn't using Xbox Live so why bother keeping it. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to recover that gamertag for a future 360 purchase. Has anyone been in that exact same boat and what was the outcome ? I know people have been able to bring over Xbox 1 gamertags to 360 with no problem but I've got the feeling cancelled ones will be forever lost in history from Microsoft's initial way of doing things with Xbox Live. what
No, Gamertags aren't deleted through inactivity.

Slane
It's there, they know it's there the e-mail you used for it will continue to receive e-mails from Live about events. But they will not let you re activate it or change your 360 account (if you made one) to the same name of your old account, even if you have the entire history of it, which they still do. Stupid policy is stupid.
oceanmotion
Well, just realised it's a no go even if it did work because I haven't used the hotmail address associated with the Gamertag for over 2 years so that passport/live id has been deleted, just tried and it doesn't exist any more. Ah well, sucks. Recycle the gamertags Microsoft! Anyway, quick question.. If I sign up to Xbox.com and create a gamertag, will that be the one I get to use on my 360 or is the website tag temporary till I use an Xbox ? Olemus
That will be the one you can use on your xbox, however depending on which xbox SKU you get you may want to open the account on the box itself and take advantage of a months free live (60gig and elite models)
