My 360 just cracked my CoD:WaW disc

Recommended Posts

What the hell is wrong with every 360 I own? I just finished watching a Netflix disc rental and decided I would play some Call of Duty. I popped World at War into the drive and hit play on the dashboard. The screen stays black and I hear a clicking sound coming from the console. I immediately eject the disc to find an ~1 inch crack running out from the center of the disc.

What the hell? I've heard of the unit scratching discs before but what's this about?

It's a rhetorical question. I'm ****ed, let's just say.

Out of warranty?

There was a big debate previously that scratched discs were caused by moving the console whilst a disc was spinning. I take it you didn't move anything?

Well that's happened to a friend of mine with GoW before. Is your console vertical?

My console is horizontal, still in warranty and hasn't been moved since I connected it.

I'd get it replaced then (Y)

I've read it can be quite hard to get MS to replace a scratched/cracked disc, and when they do it can take some time, so I wouldn't risk any other games getting grinded.

I was watching a consumer show earlier about 360 consoles snapping and scratching discs like there was no tomorrow. Quite an unfortunate coincidence

Online? I'd like to see it.

In general I have absolutely no idea how a dvd rom laser can physically scratch a disc, anyone care to explain?

Or is it caused by the disc being "bumped" or something with the speed it's spinning at? I thought this might be the case as people said it was more likely to happen if you decide to pickup your 360 and spin around your room when it was still turned on and reading a disc.

I tried an old MLB 2k game and it worked fine. I just can't believe the horrible string of luck I've had with the 360 since I've owned it.

Mythbusters did a think where they speed up a CDROM drive till the CD shattered to see if it was possible and could kill a person. Kinda cool actually.

But I never had a problem with my 360. Bought it 6 months after they were available.

Well I think it's quite a random/unlucky experience if it grinds a disc (you don't hear THAT many complaints about disc scratching), but what I was saying was better to get it replaced than see it maybe do it again in 5-6 months.

I don't think it's likely it will do it again so shortly afterwards unless the drive is on the way out.

Back in the day my 360 burnt my Perfect Dark zero disc and also burnt my Test drive unlimited disc. Guess my 360 got bored with the games!

As to your snapped disc, Ring microsoft. I think they have a replacement program for discs, if not raise hell until they point you in the direction. Maybe contact the game devlopers of CoD:WaW? (Which off the top of my head I would of thought it would be ubisoft?)

If it really is a problem, I could just replace it at Best Buy since I have the warranty.

It was Watchdog on BBC One. You can probably catch it on iPlayer.

They ran some pretty detailed lab tests, it was quite interesting.

I got a 360 generation 1 (bought not too long after release). So far (touch wood) I've had no problems with the hardware but I have had multiple discs scratched to the point that they no longer run.

My console is horizontal and has never been moved. It's not the laser that scratches them, I reckon it's the actual tray. The discs are still spin on the tray itself a bit and since the trays aren't silky smooth they lead to scratches. I've noticed that the scratches on my discs are usually always in the same place.

I'm heading to Best Buy to exchange it. This will be my 5th ****ing Xbox 360. I'm going Sony next gen, if they're still around.

EB Games here offer 1 year warranty on games, and thrust me, every 360 games I buy there, I put it on.

That's the one.

iPlayer on PS3? Web browser or download streaming?

I just watch things through the web browser.

Sometimes a little laggy, but it generally works well. Full screen and high quality mode are now available, weren't a few months back.

That was an interesting watch.

I didn't know MS have actually denied the issue and don't fix/replace your console if it's scratching discs.

I always thought it was a known issue and they treated it like the RROD (minus the 3yr warranty).

I've seen CD-roms shatter discs, its not unknown. Drop activision an email, they normally have disc replacement services, for a few dollars they'll replace the disc.
