PDP Unveils Gametrak Freedom at GDC

Performance Designed Products has unveiled an ultrasonic 3D motion sensing wireless game controller for the Xbox 360 called Gametrak Freedom. The system is comprised of a base unit, which attaches to the Xbox 360 system via USB, and a hand-held controller. PDP will launch the Gametrak Freedom exclusively for Xbox 360 in fall 2009 bundled with Squeeballs, a game specifically developed to showcase the technology.

Gametrak Freedom? is a proprietary and patent-pending ultrasonic 3D motion sensing technology that delivers performance, increased control and flexibility. The system is comprised of a base unit, which attaches to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft via USB, and a hand-held controller. Unlike other motion sensing gaming systems, Gametrak Freedom? does not rely on the gamer pointing a controller at the screen, nor does it restrict the gamer to limited movements. The system accurately tracks the true 3D position and precise movements of up to four players anywhere within a given environment. This technology provides players with total control and unrivaled game play opportunities.

PDP will launch the Gametrak Freedom? exclusively for Xbox 360 in fall 2009. The system will be bundled with ?Squeeballs?,? a game specifically developed to showcase the technology. PDP recently received a worldwide product licensing agreement to publish games for Xbox 360, and ?Squeeballs? is their first Microsoft-approved title.

What the hell, why make it so obvious that it's a WiiMote? They could at least have made some changes to it... It's like they just took a Wiimote and gave it a green X...

And? I'm sure it'll be more comfy and the Wiimote is a decent design anyway.

See, if the Wiimote works, why not rip it off?

I see this as great news, but it's all about whether any games support it.

"Saw it on the tube

bought it on the phone

now you're home alone with a piece of crap

PIECE OF CRAP"

That sums this up nicely.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 has done HD+Motion Sensing for a while now :p

But seriously, this sounds awesome. I definitely like the idea of the remote being able to track itself in 3D space.

Good way to sum up the Wii as well. :p

But seriously, if this takes off, then there will be no need for a Wii at all. Things are really starting to turn towards the 360 now. It's got most of the good games and it's the cheapest. You can grab a 360 over here now for ?130, whereas a Wii, which has been out for over 2 years, still costs ?180, just as it was when it was first released.

Except, you know, the Wii is cheaper to develop for and the perception of the 360 is that it's still for hardcore gamers.

At the end of the day, this is a third party add-on, with only 1 game for it. I honestly don't see the majority of developers adding functionality in for this third party add-on which isn't even bundled in with the console. I think the reason why we see a lot of "waggle" games for the Wii is because the Wiimote is the primary controller, and it's first party.

I mean, if I'm wrong, I'll eat my hat. I just don't see it getting very far this generation.

Unless we start seeing

Horsez, Dogz, Bratz, Chairz, Watermelonz, Dollz, Gingerbread Man, Anubis, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Action Girlz Racing, it won't matter if the 360 has motion controls.

Wii owners love the great games above (Y)
