Need Help Picking Out Xbox + Accessories

Recommended Posts

Well, I've decided to switch to a console, after years of playing Unreal Tournament and other games. Mainly because all of my buddies play on consoles and the kind of fast paced fps games I like are dying out anyway. (Quake, UT)

I have this so far, I think it is all I need for right now...to use my pc gaming headphones and to hook up the xbox to my lcd monitor.

I have a few questions though, I want a wired controller so I don't have to replace the batteries and just the thought of the sound going through wireless + the controller signal seems like there could be some lag maybe? Is there a way to opt out of the wireless controller that comes with the xbox and get a wired one, or maybe there is a better deal on another website?

The other thing is, I want to make sure to get the newest model xbox, is the one I picked out the new model with the good motherboard, dvd drive, etc? I really don't want this thing to break down on me. :/

I think thats it for right now... Also will the dvi to hdmi cable work for hooking the xbox up to my pc monitor? And I got the arcade system + the online starter kit since it seems to be a better deal than buying a pro.

Thanks. :)

OOOPS, can a mod put this thread in Microsoft.

1. You can't choose not to get a wireless controller bundled with the console, as it is boxed up with the Xbox itself. Don't worry about any 'lag' though, it's non existent. The best thing to do would be to buy a battery recharger or a play 'n' charge kit. These work really well, especially the quick charge kit (though I wouldn't recommend a play n charge, as they tend to break after a few months)

2. I don't think that there's a way to check whether you're going to get a Jasper console over the internet. The best way is to look at the team code, and the current of the 12v rail (which you can see through the window on the box) when you're actually in the shop. That said, if you buy from a website with a high turnover, you'll probably get a new one (and any newly bought xbox does have a 3 year year extended warranty for RROD). A full guide on identifying a Jasper chipset can be found here.

3. If your monitor has a DVI connection, and you are buying an Xbox with an HDMI port (and it looks as though you are from the newegg page) there shouldn't be any reason that your Xbox wont connect to a monitor - my launch copy has connected to my monitor via VGA just fine.

Also, I'm not sure why you would need the headset adapter, as the Live Starter Pack contains a headest. I could be wrong though :p

Have fun :)

Ok, thanks for the help!

I am getting the headset adapter so I can use my plantronics gamecom headphones.

And I figured since newegg gets so many xboxes I'd probably get the new model, idk though.

Play and Charge kits dont fail so easy. If they do, microsoft will replace them.

I havent had a single play and charge kit brought back at work. Yet, people who have been using it since launch day did come back and get battery packs. The good thing is, they had the cable so they spent $10 on a battery pack. But even then, they have gone 1 1/2 to 2 years of charging before it died.

The thingis, if you use them right then they last forever.

Always charge the battery at the end of its life. So when its down to 1 bar, plug it in and leave until its charged. Never put it on charge with 3 battery levels EVEN 2. The longer you use the battery and drain it out to the last bar, the long they will last.

Mine are a couple of months old, going strong. Getting an est of 25 hours of gameplay. not bad.
