Smashing Pumpkin
Just thought I would draw everyones attention to this website here. I havn't tried it yet but this guy seems to be somewhat of a genius when it comes to Home Hubs. Just watched one go for ?6 including postage on eBay - brand new. If you have 2 of them, V1.0 or V1.5 not V2.0, then you can effectively turn one into a dongle and enjoy a very cheap wireless solution for the Xbox 360. I know it's somewhat common knowledge about hacking custom DD-WRT or Tomato firmware onto other routers such as the Linksys and Buffalo but these are more expensive than the Home Hub, and as far as I can tell with my limited knowledge of networking, this method works in a different way? (I might be wrong). 2 x BT Home Hubs = Cheap Xbox 360 Wireless

InPCHell
Seems like a pretty complicated and lengthy process just to save $40-50. You can get deals on the official adapters if you look.
Advent
I've always just used my laptop and a bridge. (Internet sharing randomly stopped working, so the bridge was needed)

Plus it should be good fun/practice hacking it etc.
Smashing Pumpkin
HAHAAAA! **** you MS, it works! Got a spare Hoem Hub for free from a friend and after a little time and effort, I have my 360 wireless online for no money whatsoever. I admit I havn't tried a match over the connection, but I was able to update my dashboard which is good enough for me for now. Once I have shelled out some money for a Gold sub I will report back to tell you how well it works in a match. :punk:
Smashing Pumpkin
Got a 48 Hour Xbo Live Trial. Had a game of Halo 3 online and aside from the 13 year old kids bitching at me for actually trying to capture the flag and not betray them, it worked flawlessly. M$ go to hell, beat yo ass! Waylander
i doubt you need home hubs to do this, most wireless routers support this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System
Smashing Pumpkin
The point is that Hubs are really cheap. As put in the original post I know you can use most routers but the hubs are so cheap, it's pretty hard not to do this.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted April 8, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted April 8, 2009 Yeah that is a cheap way to get Xbox 360 online without using loads of RJ45. The only other way to do it is with Powerline, and that's about ?50 as well.
Smashing Pumpkin
I was going to use powerline adapters, but I wasnt sure if the upstairs and downstairs of my house were on the same loop, if not they wouldn't work, plus they are expensive too. The Home Hubs work perfect, i can't recommend it enough.
Plarkster
Do you have to use 2 hubs? I already have a Netgear wireless router so can I just get one hub and link it with that?
Smigit
Do you have to use 2 hubs? I already have a Netgear wireless router so can I just get one hub and link it with that? Depends on how it's creating the connection. If it's making a simple wireless bridge then sure, that'll work. If it is using the WDS protocol and your current netgear doesn't support WDS then it probably wont work. i doubt you need home hubs to do this, most wireless routers support this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System From what I've seen it's a pretty recent feature in routers. Sure lots nowdays do but for those with existing gear then they may not have the WDS support.Personally I've just flashed linksys routers and used Tomato or DD-WRT to do what I need. Gives you a choice of different security protocols, modes of connection and what not.
Prince Charming
You know, personally, I'd fork out and get the adaptor. It must look damn ghetto 'LOOK MY 360 ARE PLUGGED INTO PHONE!!!'
Smigit
Well the other pro with using a router over the MS adapter besides price and customization is the fact you can get one with multiple ethernet ports. Not an issue for many but I'm sure theres a lot of users that could benefit from the extra ports near their PC if they haven't already got them. This is exactly why I'm looking at doing this - I have a 360 and 2 original Xboxes upstairs so I could connect them all to the hub.
Plarkster
Managed to get 2 hubs for ?12.20 including delivery - crazy! Thought I might as well get 2 considering the price so I can keep the Netgear as it is so I've got a backup if needed. Looking fwd to trying this! I like the look of the home hubs actually - is that the 1.5 version in the picture? I've got a 1.0 and 1.5 on the way I think - planning on unlocking the 1.0 to connect to the internet and have the 1.5 connected to the 360. Have you got 2 of the same version or 2 different ones? Smashing Pumpkin
It's a white 1.5 in the picture. Excuse all the cabling etc. As you can see I'm more bothered about value and functionality than purdiness, hence the CRT, PC speakers, Black 120GB HDD and leaving out of the audio connection to 360 to plug my mp3 player into (it's Sony so won't work with the 360!). Downstairs I have a 1.0 Black Hub, since we're on BT I didn't need to change any firmware or anything. Although the guide recommends you do I found that it worked without :iiam: (wanted an excuse to use that emoticon for ages). Although it does work very well I have experienced occaisional periods of inexplicable lag when playing Halo 3 online (the only game I've tried so far). Though this may just be due to the distance/number of walls that are between the 2 Hubs. If we wern't renting this house (hence the curtains in the picture!!!) I would have laid out a load of cable in a flash.

Plarkster
Let me know how you get on (Y) Only received one hub so far but got it running on my ISP quite easily. Connection seems the same as the Netgear, although I have noticed it has disconnected a few times so I'll keep an eye on that. Shame they've only got 2 ethernet ports - I didn't realise that! I've got an ethernet socket doubler though so all's not lost. Just waiting for the second hub to arrive now so I can get it all finished - hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. How are you finding it now?
Smashing Pumpkin
Played pretty much perfectly to be honest. I had a fair bit of lag when I posted about it before, but since then, nothing really. Only when my relatives are on the PC watching youtube or downloading viruses without knowing it or whatever they do on there. n then I just unplug the wireless dongle from the PC and they don't know what's wrong :p
Plarkster
Finally got round to testing this properly - had a quick game on Fifa 09 and it worked perfectly. Watched a few movies on XBMC on my Xbox 1 and they played fine apart from one that stopped halfway through - I guess it lost the signal or disconnected or something? It's worked fine since though. The only problem I have really is that I am still getting some random disconnects from the internet with the hub that is connected to the phone line - if I login to the hub when I can't get online it says it is connected so it seems to only disconnect for a second but it's long enough to be annoying. I'll see how it goes but pretty pleased with it so far. Thanks for the link!
