To me. it sounds like a million other web sites NOT to visit!

Saying that, it is hard to think of original things to put on a web site.

When I am updating my own, I look around following links endlessly to find sites with good ideas poorly done. I have no problems about nicking the concept and improving it for my own needs.

You need something that will bring people back to your site over and over again.

Why create a site if you don't have anything to put on it?

People will only want to visit a site if they find the content interesting, and if you can't think of anything interesting even to yourself why would they be interested by it?

Too many people create websites with the standard guestbooks and shoutboxes, but no accompanying content.

If you can think of something cool, then go for it, but otherwise why even bother?

it depends on what kind of site you want it to be...do you want to post news every day? make it a family site? make it a site about you? a site about your car? your dog? (get the picture)?

find sites like the one you want to create, see what they do, how they do it, then draw your own conclusions

some suggestions would be nice.

Don't want to sound too brutal on you, but if I come up with any new ideas, I would not be giving them out to people!

I know how hard it is to come up with ideas, I've been there and done that so many times over the years I've been doing my web site, but usually ideas come out of the blue to me (usually after spending hours staring at a blank screen).

Ask your mates if they have any ideas, maybe ask them to be contributors to keep the site updated.

thanx for your help theprotege

it will at least give you some ideas. its how i started...also, do what Khephren says, get friends to help start your site, they'll give you helpful tips for free...and they'll take it easy on you :)

i started with family and friends....and i save every "version" change that my websites go through, without them (looking back at my first site)...i'd probably have won worst website on the web 10 years running...all i had was an about page, a welcome page, and some stuff with IM links etc...i even went with the cheesy free background (different one on each page) etc...no organization just jumbled text and smiles...and to top it off, hosted on aol :) heh

:woot: , 512k, holy crap that was huge...i had less than 200k among 3 pages and those horrible borrowed animated gifs from animatedgiffactory.com or some crap. my friends thought i was the coolest guy on earth for being able to do a webpage, i had requests out the arse to do sites for them...and i did a few...

those poor ******s...

i should have a backup of it somewhere at home, i'll take a screenie and post it tonight...but i'll warn you...that page gives that peter pan guy a heavy weight challenger...

lol it was aol, close enough :woot:

i don't have a backup of that one so there is an extent to my shame, heres a screenie from 98 :x

at least i could do logins back then...as you can see, i moved away from the animated gifs...this was right about when i started playing with tables...hence the boxy look.

all those pages and this site was around 300k...probably cause there wasn't crap on the pages haha

EDIT: link is a mouseover effect on the table...

PS - i don't mind if anyone uses that template but please let me know if you do...thanks

Hey that don't look so bad for 1998, here's mine LOL I'm cringing as I look at it still :)

I do it for a living so I'd like to think I'm a little better now :)

not bad khephren...at least you had graphics going...note the lack of graphics on my page-o-shame. I actually didn't figure out how to do my own graphics until I found macromedia fireworks (graphics for dummies). i do some work off to the side, so i too like to think i've improved, at least for prides sake...heh
