RDP7? New remote desktop?

Recommended Posts

I loaded build 7057 onto my desktop PC and was dismayed that I still couldn't get aero to work in remote desktop from my laptop. It seems that the version had not changed from Vista yet.

I currently have two Windows Vista Business PC's, and when I remote into one of them I never get aero -- apparently this only works when the host machine has Vista Ultimate (retarded limitation). Supposedly the new version of remote desktop in Windows 7 will allow any aero capable machine to log in to a Windows 7 RDP host capable machine and get aero. As yet, I have not seen this functionality in any of the betas.

Aero over remote desktop still seems to be a cluster. MS really screwed up making it so finicky; I have yet to see it work on any occasion, and the internet is riddled with blog posts about the same thing. No one seems to know the exact parameters needed to get it working.

To those of you with build 7068: has remote desktop been updated? Does aero work over RDP now? Does anyone know if I will ever be able to log a Vista Business laptop into a Win7 Pro desktop and get working aero?

Aero has worked in Remote Desktop since Vista - you just have to turn up all the options on the Experience tab. Windows 7 has included the latest version of Remote Desktop since at lease build 7000 and probably earlier.

Aero over RDP only works if the host and the server are the same OS version. Remoting from a Windows 7 machine to a Windows Vista machine will not support remoting of the DWM / Aero (nor vice versa). Also I don't think there are any SKU limitations as you suggested.

1. There most certainly are sku limitations. i have every experience box checked off, running vista business on both machines. I suppose I could acquire vista ultimate to double check that this is the problem and the reason i don't get aero, but i'm fairly certain it only works if the host computer is running vista ultimate or enterprise. no idea how they will handle this with win7. here's a link http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...top-connection/ where they say business isn't mentioned in the ms docs, and a comment where a vista business user also reports that it does not work.

2. That's a real shame if aero/dwm won't work between vista and win7. They really should have worked that out considering how many laptops out there are running Vista and will be for the foreseeable future.

Also, I did start an instance of win7 in a MS VM from within win7, but still i couldn't get aero to work. i think others have had similar experiences. the whole thing is incredibly flaky.

I was able to get it to go without a hitch between two Windows 7 Ultimate build 7057 x86 machines. The Windows Media Player enhancements were pretty impressive, being almost usable over 750kbps WAN connection. I'm sure it would be flawless in a LAN environment.

Aside from that, though, I've never seen Aero over RDP work right. Between pretty much any combination of Vista Business, Ultimate, and Server 2008 with the desktop experience installed, it's always classic theming. Not a big whoop; classic still performs way better over WAN links so it's going to be what's used.

As a little aside, Explorer still looks really ugly in classic. Fixing up the stop/refresh/search buttons to match IE, cleaning up unnecessary borders and broken alignments, and setting the breadcrumb bar's background to white and the details bar to the button face colour would go a long way. :)

I always get windows Basic, but I don't think there is much difference.

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate in a VirtualPC and if I log into it using one of my Business edition computers, Aero works fine. I've never seen it before so this is really my first personal confirmation that it actually works.

But this also confirms that Vista business sku cannot provide Aero if it is a host.

As for Windows 7, I don't know how you got aero working. I installed Windows 7 7048 (i think) in a VirtualPC while running Windows 7 7048, and the two versions would not give me Aero.

The whole thing is flaky to the extreme. The good news is that aero doesn't even seem to provide a significantly improved experience. I was thinking it might allow for windows to move more smoothly or something over RDP. The actual result is that the experience is the same as basic; it is just as laggy and jerky, but now there is shiny glass.

No big loss I suppose. Still annoying though.

Anyone try this on the RC?
