Down again

Recommended Posts

Well, I've made a statement not to long ago about people complaining about their 360's breaking down. Mostly the RROD. I've had the E 74 error twice now.

1st one) April 4th, 2008 (my birthday)

2nd one) April 3rd, 2009

Luckily, the 1 year warranty at GameCrazy saved me and got me a brand new 360 elite straight from the back of the store.

Be on the look out for this error it's getting pretty depressing. Thank you for a 360 Arcade backup and great people at GameCrazy. Applied for a job there.

Mostly, this was a heads up letting you guys know like I said 2 times now that error is getting out there now. I believe it's a GPU error or something like that.

E74: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)

Im glad you got a new one hassle free (Y)

Yeah, I checked every connection of cords I could. VGA, HDMI, HD Cables...no go. On the arcade it worked fine. I didn't want to do any of the "tricks" to make it work. Paid $40 for a new warranty and everything was gold.

Pretty sure my bro's just got the E74 - his xbox is now with MS :p

Did he have to pay the $100 fee or whatever? I said no no to weeks of waiting for a refurbished 360 elite to arrive at my house. Brand new for $40 works fine for me.

What causes E74, why did it start up after NXE? :/

Well the first I ever heard of it was after NXE.

Thats what I had on friday night, just been collected for repair by UPS at 15:20 today. I bought a new jasper arcade in the meantime; which is now my 7th xbox!! my lauch day console also had E-74 error.

I don't think anyone needs anymore heads up. When people start buying backup consoles I laugh and admire such dedication.

7th?! LOL if you were Bangbang I think you'd have started a killing spree right about now.

With your gamerscore though Rob it's clear you game on them a lot meaning a lot of continued use. You should be employed by MS to playtest the next xbox in a lab constantly for like 300 hours :p

As long as you're under warranty and it's a free replacement I don't see why not. If you like the product clearly you want it back and working again. If it's at the point where you're constantly paying then that's a bit different...

ps. I'm gonna read about E74 myself, no one in here seems to know what it is

The NXE doesn't cause E74 errors. They've been around just as long as RRoD.

It's caused by faults of the H/ANA chip or/and the GPU over heating.

Forgot to mention doing the x-clamp fix will also reduce your chances of it happening. Of course that voids your warranty though.

Yeah?

I hadn't seen anyone mentioning them at all until a few months back :/

What's the stance on them, fixed in newer consoles like the RROD? Are they related to RROD issues?

I've not had one, neither have any of my friends.

Well we said it had 3 red lights  so we'll see if MS decides to charge us around ?60:pp

@Gavin,

Yup, been around for ages. When MS announced the 3 year warranty scheme there was a lot of p***ed gamers' because they only had one red light, forcing them to then towel their 360 until they had 3 red lights. Doesn't work though, MS can check the tempertures the console has reached. When you towel the console gets too hot, beyond that of the RRoD temps. Of course people get lucky though, or the person repairing doesn't give a damn either way.

And yeah they are both related. I had one light at first just a few weeks ago, soon after it changed to 3 (partly my own doing). I fixed it though by removing the x-clamp and using springs & bolts.

Ive had couple of these types of warnings, but after a restart they seem to go away..

Or is this just a similar warning screen and not E74?

I wouldn't say that it is fixed in the new[er] consoles as it was my elite that got the E-74 on friday night!

Out of the 7 Consoles the first one had a hard-drive failure 2 months after having bought it, the next one had E-74 after about 6 months. The next one had 3 Red lights. Then I bought my elite, after selling the repaired Red light console, i then had to replace two elites because they were both scratching discs. So the 6th one - the elite is now in for repair, and my 7th the jasper will be used downstairs in the living room for occasional v.late night playing when noise is an issue.

And Gavin don't worry I have had plenty of compensation from mircrosoft for my troubles, I am very persuasive when I need to be and I normally always get what I ask for, from Microsoft I have had 5 wireless headsets - 3 of which I use in rotation, the other 2 given to friends, 3 wireless controllers - handy for when i break one :p 2 wired headsets pretty useful for when friends come round and want to talk in party chat as well. 3 months free live sub. 2 games, and a free 512MB memory card!

Nik trust me if it goes away it won't be E-74.

Your last Elite was most likely a Zephyr or Falcon though. Both of which were running the old GPU's.

The reason many believe all the RRoD/E74 errors are now a thing of the past is because the Jaspers have the 65nm GPU.

And here's hoping Jasper's really do end all the troubles. I don't want to wait for the Valhalla's before I have a reliable 360  No doubt yourself and Bangbang023 feel the same :p

Mine has just got the 3 RROD. I haven't been on it for a good couple of months. Sat down to watch Shooter HDDVD, and bam. Gutted.

Phoned support, and it'll all be fixed for free so no biggie. I can wait, its not as if I'm on it every night :)

Hip Hip Huzzah for extended 3 years warranty :)
