PETA targets World of Warcraft

Recommended Posts

PETA is taking the battle against Canadian baby seal slaughter to a whole new front - World of Warcraft.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would really like it if Canada would stop killing adorable little baby seals, and this weekend they're making Azeroth their battleground. This Saturday on the Whisperwind server, activists are urged to travel to the Howling Fjord zone to take on four Canadian Horde seal killers. Why Horde?

Thrall refused to ban the slaughter of seals, despite multiple requests from the Alliance to do so, because Orgrimmar stands to make a large profit from the fur.

I'm guessing this special event doesn't fall within World of Warcraft story canon, and I'm not so sure that PETA picked the correct venue for their protest. I have personally skinned thousands if not tens of thousands of animals over the course of my first rogue's career as a leatherworker, from bunnies to turtles to kittens to small, fluffy, doe-eyed animals that don't even have real-world counterparts.

I do like their overly specific instructions on how to participate, however.

* You must be in the WhisperWind realm in order to fight. Visit WorldofWarcraft.com if you need information about how to switch into this realm.

* Once in the WhisperWind realm, go to Northrend, where you will find a zone called Howling Fjord, where the baby seals live on glaciers and boats float in the fjords. This will be the battleground to stop the slaughter. (Note: You must be at least a Level 70 player in order to enter Howling Fjord.)

* The battle will take place on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. EST.

Anyone who has reached level 70 is going to know how to transfer servers, and most likely isn't going to be too keen to pay for the service in order to participate. Also, you don't need to be level 70...you just need to know you stuff...or be a Shadow Priest.

They did, at least manage to not pick a PVP server for their event, which saddens me to no end. So much for audience participation.

Here's the promotional video they've put together to commemorate the event, in which Canadian Horde seal hunters sound very much like some of my neighbors here in Georgia, because everybody knows that Southern accents equal ignorance.

Does PETA even realize that the northern canadian peoples (Inuit) depend on seal hunts. Its almost their ONLY source of food and trade. Additionally, like the author said, I didn't know that Inuit peoples sound like Georgia rednecks! Shows how "informed" they are.

News flash : most of the people in PETA are insane

I mean hell they wanted companies who made icecream to use human breast milk for it insted of cow milk because "it hurts cows"

they also apparently wanted to rename fish to sea kittens because then no one will eat them

Uh, yeah. This is happening.

PETA has decided ? in a nutshell ?grief a bunch of WoW players because they?ve taken to bonking adorable-ish piles of pixels with equally imaginary weapons. Can we do Mac users next?

?That?s right, gamers, get ready: This Saturday, World of Warcraft (WoW) players will have the opportunity to combat a team of four Horde seal killers. We need your help to stop them from bashing in the heads of any more seals!? reads a post on PETA?s blog.

?Activists from across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are banding together to put a stop to the atrocious seal slaughter. Anyone who slaughters baby seals for their fur must surely be in service to the evil Lich King.?

So, putting aside the fact that PETA?s storming a sand castle while the real deal lies only a few feet away, what exactly is being protested here? Are we trying to teach Blizzard a lesson for granting an infinitely-respawning virtual seal utopia some form of population control? Because really, in that case, why not just stop subscribing to World of Warcraft altogether?

And, of course, if PETA?s brandishing its Rolling Pin of +10 Guilt at the players, why not do it in a less infuriating way? Honestly, if you ? in the process of going about your daily WoW duties ? found yourself steamrolled by a bunch of hootin? and hollerin? PVPers, would you immediately think, ?OH MAN, THE BABY SEALS NEED MY HELP?? Personally, we?d probably take a boot to one of the big-eyed little buggers, if only to relieve our frustration.

So yeah, just donate to Sea World or something. It?ll be a much better use of your time. Unless you just love griefing other players, in which case, go right ahead. It?s a free country.

What we likely have here are activists from Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor thinking they can win a PVP battle and enlisting anyone they can to help support their invasion. Their post of the PETA blog is more likely to be about recruiting than any serious real life cause. These types of online battles need to start with some sort of excuse (a casus belli) that can be used to rally support. I fully expect the invasion to have happened with or without the inclusion of the seals but whatever can be used to recruit support would be the gravy to put their side over the top.

People don't usually organize mass invasions unless they are fairly confident of good odds of an overwhelming victory (like 5 of us for every 1 of them). That being said, I've never played WoW.

WhisperWind is not a PVP server so if you don't want anybody to bother you then they can't.

As far as I can tell they're going to have a couple of peta goons make characters strut about killing seals, then they'll kill those players who will…become alive again only to be killed again. That repeats until everybody realize that this isn't fun and goes away.

Oh no!

The fact that news agencies are cutting/pasting this nonsense is exactly what they want. If you think peta is stupid or hypocritical then you just ignore their posturing until they go away. Every year they become less relevant, there's no need to bring attention to their misguided and pointless video game 'protest'.

Interesting you'd say that, the server they've chosen has 4 good guys (alliance) for every bad guy (horde).

You do realise that this is just for a bit of fun for PETA gamers?

They're not being serious.

Could have fooled me, sending out action alerts and press releases... and if they WERE joking, it's a bit sad when your organization's normal actions can't be distinguished from an internet prank

I find both, PETA and GREENPEACE (not to that extent, though) a pain in the A**.

I rarely find PETA focusing on real issues, they always go for the glamour.

Naked girls wont save the animals from fur trade .

They are a useless bunch of hypocritic idiots.

And, I am 100% vegetarian.

You do realize they aren't protesting WoW players who are killing Seals in game, they are protesting Canada, allowing the Inuit to hunt seals (which the inuit have probably been doing for centuries, to survive). So they are making 4 Canadian Horde toons, (or have already made and leveled them) that they will probably flag as PvP enabled, and allow players to go kill them in order to stop them from killing the seals. I guess they think this is supposed to be a symbolic gesture.

It's basically a publicity ploy, riding on the popularity of WoW.
