The SP2 Thread - Reloaded

Recommended Posts

Im still not going to post the d/l link to the network install till some mod says "okie/nokie"

Better safe then banned/warned

...but seriously... if you cant find a link on your own, I think you shouldn't be installing beta builds of service packs in the first place!

I was getting them off some IRC channel that i cant find now.

But i started installing since before 2055 i think.

Quick question please - SP2 RC1 has been released by Microsoft to the public. Before I install it, do I use the same uxtheme.dll patch I've been using with SP1 or is there a different patch so I can use 3rd party themes? Thanks.
No you need a patch for each Build, the one for RC1 is here:

Is SP2 cummulative? I can install SP2 right over a fresh RTM install of XP, right?

Yes

Is anyone else having some major issues with the Download of RC1 from the Microsoft Website... my two attempts have failed, and my download manager has also stopped at 100mb

Leebobs :D

Does anybody know what the /execute addition after /fastdetect within boot.ini does as i haven't seent his before?

Windows NT, 2000 and XP use a configuration file called BOOT.INI to control how the operating system is booted and any startup options. By modifying the startup switches you can manage the boot process including booting Windows in Safe mode, creating a log file, or disabling the splash screen.

More info here:

Loaded RC1 and it seems to have broken my McAfee Anti-Virus. And the Security Center says I have no virus protection... anyone else having an issue.

Cheers, im aware of this but i haven't seen the /execute switch pre sp2 and can't find anything about it anywhere and wondered what it did

Yes, since the first time they released the "Security Center"
"Failed to initalized Common Updater subsystem. Make sure the McAfee Framework Service is running. McAfee Common Framework returned error 80070005 @ 2"

Windows XP SP2 seems to break McAfee Enterprise 7.1's auto-update feature. Reporting that the Framework service isn't working. Here is how to fix it :

1. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools

2. Open Component Services

3. Goto - Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config

4. Find and view properties of "FrameworkService"

5. Security Tab

6. Change "Lauch and Activation Permissions" option to the use default selection

7. Apply > OK

8. Fixed

Hope this helps everyone with Auto-update problems

Since it is a network installation. Has any body try to intergate it into the CD so you can cleanly install it?

Yes - And I get about 8 files that won't copy from the CD which is odd but it doesn't seem to break anything

Yes, that worked... Thanks for the help.

 Help....please.? I can't get SP2 v. 2082 to uninstall so that I can upgrade to RC1....any thoughts?

Try installing 2082 again, then uninstall it. Whatever problem you have with 2082 should be resolved.

I cant really help you cause I'm not a beta tester, but it should work for ya.

btw: Welcome to Neowin :DD

According to this thread (2nd page, 2nd post from bottom) at WinBeta, it IS possible to enable concurrent sessions in RC1! I haven't tested it out yet (I've heard that some people have had problems with RC1, and I don't have any "non-production" computers), but they say it works. Here's a couple quotes from the thread (you need to actually go to the thread for the complete instructions and the file):

A digested, simplified procedure that WORKS on SP2.2082-

Make the registry changes (Heathcliff's post at the beginning of the thread)

Make the policy changes (AFeldman's number of sessions, etc)

Copy the termsrv.dll from Tomilius' post on page 2 of the thread to someplace convenient

Shut down.

Boot to a Recovery Console/ or ERD Commander 2002/2003 (any Alternate OS with Disk writes will do)

delete c:\windows\system32\dllcache\termsrv.dll

Rename c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll to "Termsrv.dll.2082" (or something else you can find later if you want to back out)

copy the termsrv.dll (from #3 above) to the system32 directory

Reboot into your XP and enjoy your mini-terminal server (note: each user session must be a different local user on the PC.)

Yarno, don't worry about it - things have not changed in 2096 in regard to the Terminal Server (at least not that I have seen.) I was hoping Microsoft would loosen up and outright ALLOW us to have multiple sessions, or the two remote ones that 2000 would get for remote administration but no. Use the same procedure anyway: it works. Still a max of 3 active sessions though, remote or local. I've been considering searching through winlogon.exe for all instances of '3'  with a hex editor that is.

    • You could make the argument that K should not be included, but FC, the fried chicken, is not the framework, it's the product. It's the Paint in Paint.NET. A closer analogy is if KFC included the name of the deep fryer they used. HennyPennyFC.

    • Apple is expanding Private Cloud Compute beyond its own data centers by Pradeep Viswanathan At WWDC 2026, as part of the improved Apple Intelligence capabilities, Apple today announced that it is expanding Private Cloud Compute (PCC), its privacy-focused cloud infrastructure for Apple Intelligence, beyond its own data centers for the first time. Private Cloud Compute was designed to handle Apple Intelligence requests that are too complex to run fully on-device. The PCC system does not store user data and does not allow Apple or anyone else to access user requests. Last year, Apple also expanded its Security Bounty program with rewards of up to $1 million for researchers who could find serious vulnerabilities in PCC. Until now, Apple's PCC data centers were using Apple's own silicon. As part of the expansion, Apple is working with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud systems powered by NVIDIA GPUs. Apple will be using this new infrastructure to execute more demanding AI tasks while maintaining the same privacy and security guarantees of PCC. The new implementation uses NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says it has worked with Google to build additional protections beyond a traditional confidential computing deployment. Despite the expansion to third-party data centers, Apple claims that its core PCC requirements remain unchanged, including stateless computation, no privileged runtime access, non-targetability, and verifiable transparency. The company highlighted that it will continue to control the PCC software stack, and Apple devices will only trust PCC software that has been cryptographically approved by Apple. To take security to the next level, Apple mentioned that it is maintaining an append-only ledger of Google Cloud hardware that is part of the PCC fleet. The company claims this will help reduce the risk of supply chain attacks. In addition to AI infrastructure, Apple also worked with Google to use technologies behind the Gemini family of models to build the next generation of Apple Foundation Models to power Apple Intelligence features across on-device and cloud workloads. As expected, for more demanding AI tasks like agentic tool use and complex reasoning, Apple will rely on the expanded PCC infrastructure running on Google Cloud. The expansion of PCC on Google Cloud will gradually ramp toward the full set of protections during the summer preview period. As before, Apple will also publish binaries for public inspection, provide research tooling, and give researchers access to live PCC nodes in research mode through the Apple Security Bounty Program.
    • my problem with outlook (new) is that it connects only to outlook.com. all connections to external providers goes through there. Got your mail server and want to use imap directly? no way... it adds a connector on outlook.com. last bug; if your email on an external provider if the same as principal email of your microsoft account, it doesn't work...
