SCEA: E3 2009 to be one of the biggest in the past 11 years

SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller is expecting this year’s E3 to be one of the most significant for the company in the last 11 years.

“It’s going to be a big E3,” Koller told VG247, talking at GDC.

“We’ve just started planning what the announcements will be, but I’ve been here for 11 years: this will be one of the larger E3s in terms of software and just discussions about where we’re going from a brand perspective and where each of the platforms is headed.”

It’s widely rumoured that PlayStation’s biggest brands are going to be megatonning Sony’s E3 press conference in June, and Koller did nothing to dampen expectation.

“I think some of the big announcements are going to come of the software side. We talked a bit at Destination PlayStation, and came out with about half of the PSP line-up, maybe even less, and the balance we’re going to be talking about in the months leading up to e3 and at E3,” he said.

“The same goes for PS3. There’s a really strong line-up of games that’s going to help drive a lot of business.”

Bring. It. On. E3 takes place in LA in the first week of June.

Wait and see, this has both the potential to be a completely underwhelming flop like last year (Wii Music, cheaper PS2 and MAG was about it) but it also has the potential to be great, some popular IP's are overdue for an update, along with the likes of GOW3 etc etc.

Even if you're not interested, don't forget about the PSP. Aside from a slew of new software announced as of late (most of which we still need to see footage of), which they'll be more of at E3, there should also be the new PSP unveiled.

E3 this year is easily going to beat last year, I bet my NW account on it ;) I mean Nintendo couldn't possibly bomb as bad as last year, we know Sony have quite a few exclusives for this year/early next to show off (and either GT5 or Team ICO has to make some sort of appearance by now...), and well, MS always keep quiet, it's hard to comment on them. They went quite casual last year, don't think they will this year. Alan Wake has got to be there, it just has to be.

I also expect developments in regards to 3D gaming and the motion controller the 360 is getting.

Anything is better than last year, well I still liked the FF13 announcement :p, but this year won't be the biggest.

The biggest years are when the announce consoles imo.

I really wish Sony would shut up and just have a good E3. Reveals have a megaton impact when you have no idea it's coming (FFXIII on 360, Warner Blu-ray exclusive). But when you say it's gonna be amazing, and let people's imaginations run wild, you never meet super-high expectations you've allowed to be set for you.

I agree with DM, E3's are supersignificant when there's a console reveal.

So unless they drop PSP2, a significant price cut that should've already happened by now for PS3, show off whatever that non-LA Niore R* exclusive from 2 years ago was supposed to be, confirm release date of GoWIII, tell us what the hell PS Cloud is, have a playable Heavy Rain, Jack Tretton coming on stage having had a sex-change surgery that makes him look like Kate Beckensdale, and confirm software PS2 BC coming back, I won't be "zomg best E3 in 11 years" impressed.

Yeah you'd think that Sony would've learned by now that this is one of those phrases that a company (especially their own, given their track record) shouldn't say. I mean, say something like, "We've got a lot of great stuff this year" or "We've got an excellent show this year" - they still make you look as good and make it harder for you to blow it.

maybe there big thing is a ps3 price drop, probably not but one can hope

I haven't heard in a while but maybe somebody can enlighten me, are the profit margins wider now? I know for a while they were razor thin so a price drop was unthinkable but it has been a while now, so they have to drop it by now. E3 is the perfect spot to do it at.

Guys they did say one of the larger in the past 11 years, not the largest in the past 11 years :p

but I’ve been here for 11 years: this will be one of the larger E3s in terms of software and just discussions about where we’re going from a brand perspective and where each of the platforms is headed.”

Plus they also said in terms of software, it's obvious in terms of hardware the only thing potentially getting announced is the new PSP. No one's expecting megaton hardware announcements all round, it's a software E3.

They're sitting in 3rd position, have the most expensive console, have a PSP that was fizzling out (software sales) and quite a few key franchises from the PS2 era still don't have release dates (GT5/GoW3/New ICO project). This generation it's easily becoming the one with the most expectation for Sony.

Not hard to believe at all they're going to give up release dates for GoW3 (100% confirmed), GT5/Team ICO maybe, and other games for both PSP/PS3. Amongst a probable PS3 price drop. Everyone needs to remember that Gran Turismo is essentially the PS Halo :p

I wouldn't let yourself get over-hyped, but I wouldn't start jumping on the play it down bandwagon either, it's going to be a big E3 (Y) This is Sony saying it is, not one of the 1000 gaming websites that usually start off spouting rumours before E3 about big announcements that never happen.

I would have to agree with you on this one saying that Sony will finally be able to deliver. Up until now they have always have to say "well it's on the horizon" or "it's coming soon" but this year they will really be able to show off.

I know, but my point is Sony needs to shut up and just do it. Don't start a hype train a month beforehand.

I like that quote.

But this is the internet, the only people reading these sort of news topics and even making anything out of them are gaming news junkies, and there is a hype train every single time. Half the people going to E3 will go with ideas of whats on show, but they won't have studied the internet gaming bible beforehand to see what John Koller had to say about their trip to E3.

And to be honest it's fun watching all the meltdowns and bitter tears when gamers either

a) Overhype things and end up disappointed

or

b) Get all defensive when their "rivals" are hyping something big and they feel the need to start downplaying (not to be mixed up with trying to calm down the hype train)

Gaming drama ftw

Plus as I tried to iterate earlier it's chest beating surrounding software, something it's pretty damn clear Sony have a lot of artilery for at E3 across the PS3/PSP, and maybe even PS2. No one ever said this would be the best E3 ever, but it's certainly most likely going to be the best E3 so far for the PS3.

Audio any idea where I can get a re-cap of 07's E3? Trying to remember what Sony had that year. 2006 was obviously the year it came out, no clue on 2007, and last year there was a lot of disappointment.

Even if they just showed playable (soon to be released) software it will be considered a major success so anything else will be a bombshell in my mind.

And it has to be better than the last couple of E3s across the board, which overall were not very interesting events.

Biggest E3 confirmed, you can watch it Home

TheHater2 | April 23rd, 2009 at 9:13 am

are you guys planning anything for HOME for E3 this year? Like we will be able to see the Sony press conference live through HOME?

Locust_Star replied on April 23, 2009 at 10:04 am

We are, indeed, planning some events to coincide with E3. Details will be coming soon.

We'll be the judge of that
Said the exact same thing to myself when reading the topic title.

"E3 2009 to be one of the biggest in the past 11 years"

OR

"E3 2009 to be one of the biggest disappointment in the past 11 years"

It could go either way really and i vote for the later.

You actually think E3 2009 will be one of the biggest disappointments in the last 11 years?

Eh, no, and I'll hold you to that bet.

MS will show Alan Wake and Sony Heavy Rain, for me those two games are most likely going to trash everything shown at E308 themselves

Not to mention E3 as a show itself is back to it's former glory with public entry, more stalls, booth babes , etc. E3 as a show has been dire the last few years since they axed everything and tried to go all corporate and journalists only.

The biggest disappointment Sony could announce would be the Playstation 4
