[Official]Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

Recommended Posts

I managed to play the PC version for about 20 minutes at a friend's house and here's what I have to say:

  • The game itself gets boring quick. It doesn't feel like Operation Flashpoint.
  • The menu style/system is amazing. It's well done and blends in awesomely with the visual theme of the game.
  • The sounds aren't too shabby either.
  • It's obvious that the game has been dumbed down for consoles. The graphics aren't up to par for a PC game in 2009.

This game could've been a 100x better if it was PC-only. The graphics would've been better (DX10/DX11), the AI would've been top-notch, the maps would've been bigger, and the environments would've had more detail. Simply put, ArmA II looks and plays better. I'm glad I didn't waste $39.99.

I decided I'd fire up the Mission Editor, mainly to try out a helicopter of some sort and see what the rest of the island looks like. The mission editor is fairly easy to use, it's basically a bog-standard "looks confusing" map-editor made easy but it's still very cumbersome to use. So again, Bohemia's editor wins hands down. I placed a small selection of attack helicopters and had to restart a few times because the flight controls are awful! I'm using the 360 controller and figured it would be fairly forward. Power controls are on the same stick as the rudder controls and power needs to be constantly applied, thus making the use of rudder harder. They also reversed the 'standard' control order, so overall terrible. Same goes for the flight model - That is so boring, doesn't feel like you're flying a heavy helicopter whatsoever, more like a home-built RC Helicopter.

As for the island, it's such a barren wasteland. I almost put my arms in the air when I found some housing and it was a building with a fence ... that's it. There is SO much of NOTHING! It's pathetic. Oh and Crudmasters mentioned it would take 20 minutes to cross the island in a helicopter, yeah no wonder when they barely hit 20 km/t -.-

This is slowly becoming one of the worst games released this year.

Better not be a console port. I wish it would use DX 10.1, so I could get some free AA performance.

Nope never works well this way.

I want to know how it got all those good reviews. Did they get paid to give them the scores it got maybe?

I was wondering the same thing myself earlier today, usually I can see why a game gets decent review despite me not liking it but this time ... I'm puzzled beyond words.

It's good for a console game, but not good for a PC game. I haven't tried any of the vehicles. Honestly though, the only good thing about this game are the menus. They blend in so well with the game's overall colour theme (black/yellow). By the way, this is one of those games that look better in screenshots than in-game.

I think the answer lies within the last 2-3 pages of this thread  The game is pretty terrible technically and not only that, it's making a mockery of the Operation Flashpoint name which Bohemia Interactive is responsible for. Want a proper military simulator for the PC? Armed Assault II, want a watered down military simulator for a console or the PC? Don't know but this definitely isn't this.

its a bit hard to get Armed Assault II since well, it does not exist.

its ARMA 2 the first one was Armed Assault this one is simply Arma II not

Arma wins I might buy it though. you cant download (you can but it sucks) they have good pirate potection. you turn into a birdy!

if only I knew how to use NVG since night was actually dark. unlike most games where even though there is no light you can see without night vision. I dont know if those devs have ever been away from the city at night but you see like 2 feet infront of your face. and thats with no clouds

best Arma II review ever

too bad this one is getting bad feedback from gamers. as for this being the result of console-centric dumbing down, that's ridiculous. let's not get carried away, it's not like PC's can magically transform a game - all they have is a more flexible control scheme and pricier, more dynamic hardware. all those just make for more, not better. if this game is bad on a PC it's because of the developers, not because of the consoles.

Really is a shame, ArmA II is such an epic game.

where can you buy it? only found it online really. which is a problem as I dont have a credit card though I suppose I could get an pre-paided

never play the pirate game 1. support the devs for making a good game. 2 they where smart at anitpiracy. stoping you from running the game is stupid. making your guns EXTREMLY inaccurate and turning you in to a bird is full of epicness

Yeah, Bohemia Interactive's Anti-Piracy measures are quite crafty. They have been using FADE ever since OFP1 and it's working quite well. As for places to buy, I'd suggest your local store or something like that? I personally won my copy over at Armaholic.com along with a nice, branded Zippo.

In case you do get access to a credit card of sorts, it's on Steam :)

Dare I say it, I am really enjoying OFP DR at the moment. Yes it has a lot of bugs, but Codemasters are already working on patches which are coming out in a matter of weeks apparently.

Does anyone know how many missions there is in the campaign? I've read something about 11, but I hope there is more than that as I am on mission 6 already. :p

Just found this, the missions haven't taken me so long so far...!

We know it takes 9 hours real time to cross Skira on foot, but how long will the campaign take roughly, if we do every mission?

Most missions take, on average, around 40 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes to complete. There is 11 campaign missions in total, and those times don?t take into account the addition secondary objectives or the bonus hidden objectives that the player will be able to complete. Also, we expect players to take much longer when playing on the Hardcore difficulty mode.

11+ hours is decent for a FPS considering you can beat halo 3 in what. 5-6 hours?

When you look at it that way, I guess your right. ;) Although to be on mission 6 after playing for about 3 hours today, although I am sure it's going to get harder!!

I tried playing this online the other day when it got released on Steam.

Boy that was a mistake. I must have found the one server with PROS only and no NOOBS or something. Apparently, if I didn't run to the jeep or vehicle fast enough for them, I was a NOOB. If I didn't help my squad identify targets and call in a strike right away I was NOOB.

God it feels like I'm playing Heroes of Newerth in FPS mode...

Wow what the hell. I was just in an online PS3 match and I was shooting at the enemy and it took around 15 hits to kill them. I wasn't that far away, I saw the grey indicator showing I had hit them and blood was going everywhere, yet they took entire magazines to take down!

I wasn't lagging either.

yeah it sounds like online is crap. I have better aim in real life then in this game. and when I was at the shooting range today I couldnt hit a cup for 20 feet away :( or a puddle... and I had a scope. I hate my glasses they get in the way

From what I remember, you call an air strike or artillery from the same radial menu. Other than that, I don't know. I only played the PC version for a short while at a friend's house.
