Great site & forum, but one tiny suggestion.

First off I'd like to say that I love these forums. Great moderators and a great community make me coming back here for a long time now. I've made posts in the past & have tried to contribute any insight & knowledge I have, but I do have one minor suggestion. I know you wont change everything around based on one person suggesting something but I hope it touches on something maybe the moderators feel as well. The forums have way too many sections to it in my opinion I feel very overwhelmed when I see every different topic. Now I understand that Neowin.net has thousands and thousands of members and if there were less diversity to the forums front page this place would be so congested but I was wondering if there was a way to have maybe 5 or 6 main root topics and then multiple subfolders under each topic. I know that's how it is now a little bit, but all I'm suggesting is maybe a different way to lay it all out. Other than that love the site & love the forums!

You'll eventually learn that the site forums may LOOK intimidating with so many sections, but many of us learn that there isn't enough, or just enough sections on the site

I agree with Lylesback. It is certainly a nice layout and plan. I can't seem to find enough Apple related things, and would you believe, I go here for my Apple stuff rather than the other Mac forums? Says a lot about Neowin IMHO.

It is one of those things that once you get used to it, you will wonder how you got along without it. :)

If there are entire sections that you don't like then you can condense them with the minus [-] button.

For example, if like Windows but not Macintosh or Linux then you can condense the other two sections (or vice-versa).

I have to agree with the bolded part of your post. The Neowin Mac forums contain actual information instead of fanboys wetting themselves over the smallest new feature of $Apple_product. :p

A few months ago we did a restructuring of our forums because it had become hard to navigate. What we have now is a good balance: threads get the correct amount of exposure on the index of each forum, rather than staying there for weeks or only being there for a few minutes.

We do have some forums that are inactive, but most are by necessity. For example, our Windows 9x forums are largely inactive, and some would say useless. But they actually get some use. We're one of the few communities that can actually still provide support for those OS's, due to our large number of users.

I don't think we can reduce the forums any further than we already have without throwing off the nice balance and organization we have.

However, as said above, you can collapse 'categories' of forums, such as the Windows forums or Mac or Linux subforums. That reduces the number of forums on the front page significantly.
