Windows 7 RC - Install time?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Having used Windows 7 as my main OS since the public preview, I would be interested to know the install times that other user's have been achieving.

I've used many builds since release, inlcuding build 7000, 7068, 7077 and now the RC, build 7100.

Each install has taken around 25 minutes from DVD insertion to the desktop and the RC seemed to take just a little longer.

I'm sure I've read that Windows 7 would install quicker that previous Windows versions and I;ve seen install times of around 10 to 15 minutes or less, posted. Obviously install times are dependent on the 'spec' of the computer you are using.

My Toshiba P200 Satellite Notebook:

CPU: Intel Core T5450 2 Duo 1.66GHz, 667MHz, 2 Core, 2 Logical Processors

RAM: 2 GB 667MHz

Display: ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2400. total graphics memory is 895MB, total dedicated memory is 128MB and the Microsoft display driver

The Hard Drive is a Toshiba ATA 5 drive and the DVD drive is from LG.

If some users are install in around 10 minutes, are they using more RAM

Regards

Please explain the 8 gig flash drive and how it works. :)

I'd like to hear the install times of the users who are using the 'built-in' HDD and amount of RAM used.

i installed it from an 8 gig usb as well and its twice as fast compared to when i did it from a dvd.

Same. I'm never installing from a DVD ever again.

Those of you talking about installing from an 8 gig USB - did you follow a tutorial/guide on how to do it? If yes, can you provide a link because I too wish to install the RC from an 8 gig USB drive. I'd rather have solid instructions then chance messing something up. D:

here is info on doing it from an external hard drive.

not sure about windows 7 and a flash drive though.

Well I mounted the ISO, then ran the setup from Vista to install on the second partition. Took about 30 minutes!

This is another question I have, something I see frequently.

What is 'mounting the ISO' and how do you do it?

If you install a utility like Virtual CloneDrive you can just double-click an ISO and it will show up as a DVD/Bluray drive in Explorer, just as if it had been a physical disk. It can only be used from inside Windows though, you can't boot from it. Not an issue when you're installing Windows that way as it will copy all the installation files over before rebooting.

virtual (dvd) drives

you drag and drop the image file into the virtual drive, without having to burn it phisically

My install of Win7-7100 was a DVD install, I tried a USB flash drive install but had a problem so I had to go back to the DVD. The install took a little over twenty minutes, about the same as the other builds I've installed. I've seen other threads where people say they're having problems with 7100 but so far for me it seems very fast and stable, keep in mind I've only been running it for a few hours.

Install times vary due to the fact people don't all have the same hardware setup. Some will get 15mins others will get 25min.

A few things to look at, HDD speed is key, and then your CPU speed would be 2nd.

It seems those installing from a virtual dvd (one partition to the next) will get slower times than those using a real DVD or a USB. This is probably due to the fact the HDD is working twice (reading and writing) and it slows it down.

USB key would always be the fastest but a DVD install will get you around 15-25min depending again on the speed of your HDD and your CPU speed.

For me all of the builds (x64 only) have taken about 30 minutes to install from dvd. It seems 7 really hates my very old PCI Promise IDE controller. The installer seems to hang at two points; the initial boot up before the EULA, and after you select which drive you want to install on. Eventually it finishes just fine (without ever properly recognizing the IDE controller.)

When I installed the x86 versions on my much, much less powerful, but with no strange hardware, Dell Mini 9 it took the normal 20-25 minutes or so from a dvd.
