Upgrade from Beta (7000) to RC (7100) - Anyone tried it?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of doing this myself and wondering how the experience has gone for people. As far as I can tell I just need to modify a file in the iso before installing so it will allow me to do the upgrade..

Should it work out okay? :D

Thanks!

I did it....went super smooth and had and still have no issues....I am too lazy to do a clean install right now. I figure since I'm going to have to when the RTM comes out, I'll do it then.

Slap me with a splintered ruler, but I did it too. I'll do a clean install with final.

There are a few niggling things afterwards to fix, like any upgrade, but all is essentially as it was.

One oddity: the bulk of the left side of my Start menu is missing (All Programs is blank). Everything's there, since all can be found on a searc. It's probably something simple. I used search more often than not anyway.

This is almost certainly the RC.. they'll be releasing it officially to MSDN/Technet subscribers in 4 days.

TAP and OEM partners already have it.. MSDN would never get a build before OEM partners..

What problems are you having? I haven't seen a single issue with 7100.

For anyone who sees the missing "All programs" contents in the Start menu after upgrading, whether it be from a prior build or Vista, know that the solution may or may not be simple but I did a bit of searching and haven't found the answer. All the links are still in the correct spot on disk, and the shell folders section of the Registry looks exactly right, but obviously something isn't. I'm sure someone will find the answer, but until then search does find your apps, and you could always add links in Start for:

c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

c:\Users\yourloginname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Done upgrades to 7100 on two systems.

First was my flagship Vista x64 machine (Q9550, ASUS P5Q Pro, 8GB RAM, ATI 3870 X2). The most flawless, smoothest upgrade I've ever seen. Took considerably longer than a clean install, but that's really my only complaint.

The second is, well, still in progress. Lower-end machine (E5200 dual core, ASROCK 4CoreDual mobo, GeForce 7300GT). Was running build 7000, so I had to put the install on a USB key and edit the cversion.ini file to allow the upgrade. In this case, the upgrade initiated fine, but consistently hangs after the first reboot. :(

I don't think this is an upgrade issue, though. It hangs in the same spot when I attempt a clean install. Thank God for good backup images.

I think the motherboard may have something to do with this.. I also have Asrock 4core-dual VSTA mobo and upgrade fails after reboot. However, clean install works fine.

On that first machine, did you upgrade from the beta (Build 7000)? And if so, do you notice performance improvements? :)

Following up on the "All Programs" issue: When booting today, which was my third or fourth boot for various reasons, I noticed that All Programs was back, as if by magic. So the solution is to wait and hope.

Upgrades can cause all sorts of problems. There is probably a reason why MS disabled upgrading from previous builds (except 7077).

Try a clean install and see if the problems are still there.

I have the same problem here after upgrading from 7057. There's gotta be a way to get that stuff to show up in the menu.

No, the first machine was Vista x64.
