Is it Safe to Use Windows 7 RC as Main OS?

Recommended Posts

why not? this section of the board is pretty dead in the interim between releases. :p

So what then? We need to ask the same question every week? :p

Here's an answer to all the threads:

Try it out and decide for yourself, don't follow other peoples opinions.

but if you need an opinion to use as a basis, the answer is:

-maybe-

Fair point, but either way, the best way to decide something is to actually try it out and decide for yourself. The problem is that there are many variables to take into account. I've had a brilliant experience with 7, while others have not, and there would be a lot of bias since a lot of those problems are bugs, driver/program/hardware incompatibilities and so on.

For you chaps that have already tossed away Vista..what about your licenses, don't you think you lot are jumping the gun too early...?

Back on topic:

I have been dual booting but wouldn't get rid of Vista and i don't think anyone should do so, still on testing chamber.

What about the license? Just because I've removed Vista does not mean that I don't own the license.... And when Win7 will be out, I'm hoping for the same Beta Tester Gift that MS gave to us in the past, free license. If not, well, I'm going to buy it.

And Win7, since build 7000, was better than Vista, so yes, getting rid of it is a good idea.

I used that 6956 or something build as my main OS :D

And I've like always used it as my main OS because need something that looks better than XP :p (oh and i love how Windows 7 works with drivers and how quick it is and the features and everything).

I'm currently have build 7100 installed on my Sony Vaio VGN-NR38M, Sony Vaio VGX-TP3ZB and Advent 4211-B (MSI Wind) with no problems what so ever, it's speedy and most drivers are installed.

but i cannot use it on my home built PC as there are no drivers for my Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T 500 TV Tuner Card, current Vista drivers dont work for obvious reasons, it's annoying cos i want to test it fully with my hardware.

So yeah i would say for the most part Windows 7 could be used as a primary OS.

unless your need some dentistry work (Marathon Man) - it is safe but I would store anything of value on another partition/drive like personal docs, pictures, movies, templates etc...

You can also migrate all your settings in case you reinstall.

The native image backup facility is excellent just in case - after all any Windows is Windows and BSOD always lurks around like a bad smell.

I'd say it's definitely at a stage to use it as a main OS. I have been using it as main OS since beta (7000).

Same here. Already with 7000 it was fine to use it as main OS, and it just got better with later builds. I've had no problems with drivers or programs in any of the builds.

Already with 7000, Win7 was a great deal better than the retail version of Vista

I use it as main since 7000. Vista is horrible on my Inspiron 6400. Constant loading from the HDD (even after 45 minutes+). Seven is blazing fast, load at startup than stop and use the HDD only when it needed it.

Yes. I'd consider it as safe as any other OS at this point.. which means regular backups should be taken.

Build 7000 was the first built I stuck with long term.. and I did fresh installs for 7057, 7068, 7077 and later 7100. All of them have been solid on my hardware at home and at the office, but 7000 had more problems than the later builds with a few of the apps I use.

Running 7100 now though (at home and the office) and everything is going along pretty much perfectly.

I wouldn't install it on the PC or friends or family just yet.. but it is good enough for my purposes.

I'm particularly happy with windows 7 today because problem steps recorder works beautifully with unity enabled in Vmware workstation 6.5.. so I can write bug reports for my company's software and give them the steps to reproduce generated by problem steps recorder capturing my XP application windows.

Any Beta os should never be used as your main OS, it is for testing only. nothing more.

no, don't you watch apple commercials? as soon as you boot with windows on your computer it will get 500 viruses, 20 trojans, your video card will melt and you will get crabs.

7100 is perfectly fine. It's probably the first Release Candidate of a Windows OS that's ACTUALLY worthy of being a candidate for release.

Feel free to use it as a primary OS on a non-essential computer, but neve use a non-final OS on an essential computer. First, you'll need to reformat for the RTM, and second, if anything happens, your basically sunk.
